Electric Supercharger versus a mechanical bolt-on.

Hey everyone. I'm new to the forum. I've been reading a lot of posts & thought I would finally say Hey.

I wanted to ask everyones opinion about Superchargers. My wife & I have a 2003 Corolla Sport. I saw a TRD Supercharger for it for over 2 grand that bolted on the top, but takes some of the power away from the engine to get it moving. Then I happened on a website that has an electric supercharger that's basically an inline fan forcing more air into the engine through the intake. The price is a lot different 2500+ for a bolt on & 300 for the electric supercharger. I know you could probably find them cheaper somewhere else, but the electric Supercharger seems to me to be a win,win situation because it doesn't rob the engine of its power to force air. Any opinions are appreciated :)

an electric super charging is the equivilent of having a bottle of nitrous that recharges itself every few hours. its good for about a 15-30 second boost in hp, but it uses its own battery that has to completely recharge between uses. its still pretty fun though, my friend has one, and it definately makes his car haul some serious butt when its on.

you've gotta be kidding me right? there is only one group that successfully made an electric supercharger that worked, and it wasnt called e-ram. they got it to run on an altima and the kit cost about 3k. what youre looking at is a way to blow $300 on nothing. seriously.

    *edit*

if you want a "cheap" supercharger you can get a used m45 from a mercedes compressor for about $300 on ebay. but remember you'll need to make custom mounts, a new belt, a fuel/timing computer + injectors, possibly a higher-flowing fuel pump and maybe an intercooler and of course piping. It will void your warranty. But it wont cost you more than 2k :)

LOL, I said you go ahead and buy one and tell us how you FEEL/THINK you gain 5hp out of it.

in car world ( or atleast in toyota corolla world) $100 = 1hp, price of speed is expensive

no electric fan can do a job of a real subercharger or turbo charger, and so this e-ram is just a step up from all the blowers offered for less than $50. Upgrading your car with forced induction is more than just installing a supercharger or turbo, its upgrading the fuel pump (or adding an inline one), adding an AFC, new injectors, and for better effect and intercooler, and possible better pistons and rods. You can't seriously believe that a $300 fan and some plumbing boots will do the job, if you want a quick boos buy a simple nitrous kit (like zex or NE), its probably safer and will give you that kick when you need it.

as I had said they do work, but they are definately not a drop in install. Nitrous would also definately be easier and safer and a lot easier to remove for inspections etc.

i'll go supercharge or turbo kits and i wouldnt buy something thats cheap and only gain 5hp(just guessing)when an intake can do the same and cheaper.

they're is even talk that those fans can actually reduce power because they restrict the airflow coming in..

rule of thumb when it sounds to cars... or most n e thing for that matter... if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is....

Trust me, if a lil electric fan could boost the amount of air flowing into an engine as much as a much heavier mechanical one could, race teams (with money backing) would be trying them out.. If they could save weight and keep the same amount of power or more... they're game.. Most of the really good stuff for cars is usually race-inspired, race-tested.. That's how these engineers learn the limits of their stuff and how to decrease weight, increase strength, power, reliability...

Those electric ones dont really do anything.

Go for the TRD sc, sure all mech SCs take some power but they give you much more than they take. I got mine with the install kit for $1600. Keep your eyes on ebay.

Those electric superchargers are for ricers.

There's a reason why superchargers are connected by a belt (besides getting power from the engine). The supercharger needs to work in synch with the engine. Those rice blowers do not.

Those rice blowers also CHOKE the intake manifold when the air it needs to suck in is greater than what the fan blows.

It will cost you a buttload of money to make an econobox Corolloa to go fast. You want to go fast, you're in the wrong car. Get an SRT4 or a WRX. Those cars were designed to go fast.
