    disappearing oil...

well, I have a strange case of disappearing oil... The dealership filled her up to 5 qts about 2400 miles ago. My oil light recently came on and after checking levels, she was running near empty!! I checked for any under body leaks, none found, no puddles/stains under my car where I park every night, and I'm not burning oil externally due to no smoke. I filled up 4 qts and she ran well but about 700 miles in, she's rattling again. I checked the oil level and she's near empty again!! I had the dealership check for a leak and they didn't find one and there's no oil spilling on any engine components. A few days ago I put another 3 qts in but the dipstick still shows low. Any ideas of what's happening???

    Thanks,
    ROKnight

i dont think our cars take 5 quarts. mybe four at the max i believe, and that is ALOT of oil to be useing. its got to be leaking somewhere..

errrr corolla uses 4 quarts of oil (both older 4afe 7afe and newer 1zzfe), and the earlier models do burn oil when driven hard like endurance driving on the highway but newer models don;t have that... my dads 2004 CE does oil changes every 4000 miles and most of the time its 3/4 full right before the change.

    Go look for leaks.

well, that's weird. The dealership had 5 qts on its invoice when they did the 60k service + oil change. My car is a 2001 Corolla LE, with 67000 miles on it. It's new enough not to be pissing oil. All my seals look good, gaskets too, sparks are clean, filter is new, etc. No puddles under my car when parked, no signs of leaking. I dunno what's going on...

My girlfriends CRX has that problem too. Honestly, the best guess would be that one of your oil rings is messed up, but not enough to make blue smoke or mess up the plugs. Rare, but it can happen.

btw I was wrong, the new 2003+ corollas fill up 5 quarts, checked! also gotta tell dad to put in extra quart in. :p

can you see any small oil leaks on the walls of the engine? maybe the engine cover gascet is broken?

hey guys, well seems like a common problem in the 1zz-fe oil disappearing on us. I recently pulled my engine out of my car and disassembled it down to every nut and bolt... things i found and things that can help you all since i saw other threads asking about rattling type sounds...

Our engines seem to burn oil after a while, when i pulled off the heads the chamber and valves were clean and looked healthy and the exhaust ports and header were relatively clean light carbon deposits. but the alarming thing was my pistons were black and had this crap you could scrape off of it like layers, conclusion after debates with the mechanics teaching me is that its burning oil, most likely blow by and this is me asking... can it get in from the heads? though i doubt thats where it cam from cuz my valves were clean and the head looked fine all over minus the sludge from previous owner not changing oil in time. i would look into rings if i were you guys, good thing is after 85 thousand miles my cylinders look perfect and no scratches or real wear.

will look for the other thread to post the detailed info on the rattling sound at light throttle and and on upshifts when you step into the clutch. but nutshell its the rod and mean bearrings mine were fried but thank god no crank damage yet.

Could possibly be worn valve guides or valve seals. also look in your intake manifold for oil. maybe your pvc worn!
