    Rear Garnish

Can anyone help me with some tips on how to remove my rear garnish on my 97? I remove the little nuts, and I can see it is held in by 4 little push through clips, how do i get those clips out? they are in a real awkward place, any tips for those who have done it?

    Thanks

There are more than 4 clips if Im not mistaken. There is one behind the trunk latch and one somewhere above it. Push the peg sideways and up on each side of the peg. Be careful though, they pop back in REALLY easily.

Damn I just did this about a year ago and I cant even remember. I think what I did was remove the cover for the brake light (push in the middle, then pull out). Then take all that off and out of the way. Then I folded down the seats (remove any other screws if you can find them) and I think it was a matter of just poping it up and off (a bunch of small clips, a lot of them at the back).
If I have a chance later on today i'll pop mine out and give you some more information.

after you get the four nuts off, there are 6 or 8 of those clips in various places along the garnish. if you use a flat head screwdriver and just push the sides of the clips in, they should come out. i think i got rid of all of mine when i painted my center garnish on my 97....that way i only have the 4 nuts to take out, and i'm good to go.

there are i believe 4 nuts and then some of those lockin pin things, u do need to take off the rear brake cover and u will need to go into ur trunk to release the pins and nuts...and hopefully u have folddown seats or else its a pain in the ass

I dont understand why I need to have fold down seats to get to the garnish, can I not just pop my trunk and try to get it out from there? I dont see how its attached to anything other than the rear lid, from what I can see there are a few nuts, then four clips, on the trunk lid itself, but I think i will just cut the 4 plastic clips off, then just use the bolts to secure it....maybe im wrong about all that

I think I understand whats going on, I think some people are thinking the rear garnish is the rear deck lid, on the inside, I am talking about the grey center piece in the trunk lid, on the exterior

hah, wow, u mean the piece outside the car, well then shoot me dead, i thought u meant the rear deck inside the car, lmao

thats easy, theres 4 bolts, just take off the cover up top, theres gunna be some og those plastic locking thing, be sure not to break them...

yup when i took mine off....i just broke off most of those clips.....you dont really need them anyways....as long as your garnish piece isnt bent and as long as you have those four bolts, then it should still look just as decent when it comes back on....

You can buy more of those clips from Home Depot. They're not designed to be used more than once, so just have to replace them. Pretty cheap on Toyota's part to use those instead of screws.

Speaking of clips, I'm going to need a couple for when I run my amp wire. Broke a couple off the other day when I had to remove a kick panel. Those things are fragile! (italian)
