So, my baby is on the bottle :)

This was originally posted on the CCC forums so ignore dates - it was all done abuot a week ago

Okay, so today I went down to Harrison Motorsports on Colonial & 417 to get a few remaining parts for my n2o system. I ask them for some advice and as it turns out - the 1zz fuel line is extremely difficult to tap in a safe way. Safe meaning it can be done, but the high pressure they usually run means fuel will eventually start leaking and since it's directly above the exhaust manifold.... bad idea.

So they suggest going to a dry shot instead. Seeing as how I plan only on running 50 or so extra hp on the bottle and a wet kit is only really needed when running in excess of 75-100. So, I order a nitrous solenoid and dry nozzle from them to pick up tomorrow and I picked up the microswitch from them today. (This means I have a perfectly good Zex FMU laying around that will go to the highest bidder lol)

Anyway - John (YodaHart) came over around 2pm and we got down to business. The microswitch needed to be mounted in a place where the throttle body will activate it ONLY when at wide-open throttle. Here is the before pic (notice you can see the black sharpie marks we made so we'd know where to drill the bracket after removing it lol:

Here is the switch on the bracket we rigged up to put it next to the TB:

    Here is the finished product:

I didn't bother trying to get pictures from underneath the car of the n2o line that is run from the trunk to the engine bay but trust me - it's under there lol easiest part

Next came the bottle, in all its purple-polished glory:

Now I just have to wait till tomorrow to get the Nitrous solenoid, arming switch and nozzle - hook all that up and then wait for my damn colder range spark plugs to come in so I can fill the bottle and let her rip. Hopefully have everything done by the middle of next week :D

On a side note, when I had the plastic engine cover off earlier to survey tapping the fuel line, I decided when I was done with everything to tackle the valve cover with some of that polish I bought from the lady at NOPI. As you can see - this stuff is great. I know you all know the valve cover doesn't shine like that from the factory, no matter how much you clean it. This stuff is great!

in this pic you can see the difference - I polished the flat part on the side and the front, but not the back part towards the firewall - big difference huh?

That is all - I will update as more parts arrive/are installed.

NEXT POST - FEW DAYS LATER:

Finally - after many many hours spent in the garage - my baby is officially on the bottle :fu:

    and now the pictures:

Engine bay looking empty with no battery and no CAI (yes that's pink saran wrap protecting the TB so back the fuck up off me lol its all i could find)

bottle with its new NOS high-flow valve and Zex pressure gauge lol mixup

AEM CAI + Drill bit + NOS Dry nozzle =

what my throttle body would see if it had eyes

removing stock spark plugs to replace with colder range Zex plugs:

    everything all hooked up:

my A/F ratio gauge (not installed yet - just hooked up to power for picture purposes - it's black when not on and ya can't see shit then:

finished product with wires tucked away and engine cover back on:

And now - the writeup lol

Well, we had some issues in the testing phase. Apparently when we took the left-front wheel off to remove the CAI, I didn't put the lug nuts back on properly - car shook like a mofo bout 2 miles from home. Went back (without spray yet) and realized we had lost a damn lug nut. Argh. Put stock steelie on back wheel and rape back wheel lug nuts for front wheel that is nut-deficient. That's better.

Out on 417 - open the bottle, flip the switch, get goin a bit in 2nd and floor it. Nothing noticeable in 2nd. Pulls really nice in 3rd. That's about it. Feels about .2-.5 sec quicker MAYBE. Stop on the side and run from a stop. Feels stock in 1st which is surprising. 2nd pulls a bit more. Again 3rd is teh winnar. Still disappointed. Consult friends online and get reminded that the 650psi my bottle is sitting at is quite low and optimum n2o bottle pressure is 900-1100psi. Low pressure = less power. Will be consulting the guy who filled it tomorrow. Until then... that is all.

So after several attempts to go out on 417 and see what she can do with her new-found ponies, I've come to a few possible conclusions:

    1) n2o is highly overrated (i doubt this)

    2) low bottle pressure is causing the less-than-impressive gains (quite possible)

    3) a "50 shot" really gives nowhere near 50hp (see #2)

UPDATE SINCE THEN - I determined there was a small leak where the line connects from the bottle to the "in" port on the solenoid. I got some teflon tape and re-did all the stainless line connections. No more leaks... 900psi on the gauge... loses traction in 1st gear at about 4k rpms :D :D

thanks for all the compliments - i was actually pleasantly surprised as to just how easy it is to install a dry nitrous system. We had no instructions and no experience and did it all in about 5 hours. Could do it in half that time now that I know how.

also, i keep getting that exact same comment from people "hope you don't blow your motor." nitrous isn't nearly as dangerous/harmful as everyone seems to think it is - IF, and that's a big IF it's installed properly and you don't overdo it. I'm running a completely stock fuel and ignition system with the exception of colder range plugs (stock plugs will melt and/or shatter under the greater temperature changes) - so I'm only running a 50 shot. I only bought one .032" jet meaning i can ONLY run a 50 shot - that way I can't be tempted to up the hp - cuz believe me it's damn easy to change the jets - takes about 30 seconds with the right size wrench.

Also since it's such a small hp setting, retarding ignition timing is not necessary. The stock fuel injectors can more than handle the extra fuel necessary, and I will be making this a wet setup anyway as soon as I can find a safe way to tap the fuel lines.

Also i should be getting an S-AFC II very soon. That way I can personally adjust the fuel map to make extra sure I'm not running too lean. Other than spraying too much for the pistons themselves to handle... that's the only other real risk with nitrous - detonation from having too lean an a/f mixture. The S-AFC will solve that issue :)

Bottom line - if you don't respect the n2o - it will fuck you up. If you respect it, don't try to spray too much or too often, and make sure everything is done properly... you'll be fine.

Well, you said you should still avoid spraying too often. That implies that spraying is harmful to your engine, but only in such a small amount that you won't notice unless you spray alot. Is that true?

well, it will create more wear and tear on your engine than not spraying nitrous - similar to the fact that redlining every gear now and then will create more wear and tear than always shifting at 3k rpms. it is not specifically harmful, but is more strenuous. anything that causes an engine to create significantly more power (nitrous, forced induction, etc...) will be more strenuous

well i have a zex wet kit on my yea i just cut that plastic line on that fuel line and just add a fuel hose "T" the line for nitrous and some screw clamp works fine!

yeah i know it can be done that way - but that hard plastic is so inflexible that it's likely to leak later - a fuel leak is a bad thing no matter what, and a fuel leak directly above the exhaust manifold is an even worse thing

I know what you mean about the fuel line.. it took me about 3 hours of heating and stretching to get the T to finally go in.. its an extremely tight fit and with 3 hose clamps i don't see it leaking

    LMAO!!

anyways, it'd be much safer with like a 10 shot or something :p
