    2003+ air intake questions/comments

    i'm looking a buying an air intake for my 03 (http://www.cosmoracing.com/producti...cid=126&pid=697). did a lot of research and it seems like 03+ don't work well with air intakes? i kept reading about the CEL coming on, rough idle, engine would stall, car became slower, etc. basically a lot of negative feedback after installing air intake for 03+.

    those of you that have air intake for 03+, what are your comments/suggestions? your CEL ever came on after you installed the air intake?
    what brand do you have?

    thank u.

    I just installed my CAI AEM, I have stalled or nothing bad. But when I start the car it seems it takes about 3-5 minutes for the comupter to get used to the new intake, IT IS NOT SLOWER!!!!

    i have the injen cai on mine, no problems at all check engine light came on but my dealer ship turned it right of for me i beleive its because i didnt reset comp. by letting battery cable of for 15 minutes so computer was registering too much air for the fuel. As for the 3-5 minutes the 03 i dont know about the rest has a safety feature that the car cannot be operated at full throttle untill it has reached operating tempature.

    did you have any bad experience/problems?
    based on your comment, i'm assuming you don't recommend an air intake?
    i'm just trying to get as much info as i can before deciding whether i should get one or not.

    thanks.

    I have had a AEM cold air and a short ram installed at one time, never had any problems, no cel lights, no nothing, but i did get horsepower out of both of them.

    I have an Injen CAI and have not had any code or problems. As for leaning out on the 03 I would have to say that is a crock of crap. My tuning on the dyno showed that even with the CAI the engine was running very rich. The leanest it ever got was at 3800-4900 rpms and that was about 11.5:1 a/f.

    Perhaps the Injen CAI is designed better - do you have other mods?

    The AEM CAI was a piece of shit! Lean, rich, whatever I don't care (although it was lean) - it caused some MASSIVE detonation on my 03' Corolla and long-term fuel trims that varied from +8% @ idle to +25% @ ~2000rpms - and that IS consistent with a lean mixture. From 1800 to 2800 rpms at 1/2-full throttle that engine would knock like hell. If you want crowned pistons, bent conrods, spun bearings and destroyed bottom end, then that's your business. I took the POS off and sold it...now someone else can have the headache. Miraculously, all the knocking disappeared with the stock intake back on. The BEST intake is the stock one...Toyota knew what they were doing when they designed it and you're best to just leave it alone. The stock one IS a cold air intake....it pulls air in just beside the left headlamp and unless there is a 20ยบ difference in air temp between the level of the headlamps and the road, then CAI is a waste of $ and will see your engine to an early death - this is my personal opinion based on my experience with the AEM CAI.

    I have that Cosmo racing intake. Its a nice set up. But i have an 04 engine in my 01 and it doesnt fit right. I am going to have to trim the pipe a little. But i did do a quick set up in the engine bay just to see if it worked and i could drive it but it did idle really ruff and it sounded like it was going to die a few times.

    Im going to try it again in spring.

    i ordered an air intake and i have a few questions. on the oem airbox, there's a small hose connected (vacuum line??). i was told that once i install the aftermarket air intake, i wont need this line anymore and the intake kit comes with a plug to plug up this line. is it true i won't need this line anymore? what's the line for anyways? won't it mess anything up if it's not hooked up?

    thanks.

    so plugging up the line would not cause any problems with anything?

    no problems

    i have the INJEN race division cold air on my 03. +10 horsepower on the dyno. no problems over here. if you get the INJEN intake there is a spot for that vacuum line to go. i know not every brand gives you a spot for that line so you would have to plug it if you decide with another brand.

    before i had the INJEN RD i had a knock off INJEN CAI that did not have the spot for the vacuum line or whatever it is. a friend just told me to pinch it off with a little clamp. i never had a problem with it at all. still had the +10 horses too. either way you should be ok.

    I'm not so sure about pinching the vacuum hose off - that sounds like bad business (whether it causes problems or not, I have no idea).

    The line that is connected to the TB allows fuel vapors from the tank to be sucked into the manifold and burned.

    The other hose that should connect to the intake tube is the fresh air port. If you have the engine sucking fuel vapors out of the tank, it causes a vacuum to build up inside the fuel tank. The hose that you're talking about pinching off is what allows fresh air back into the tank to equalize the pressure so your fuel pressure doesn't start dropping and so the EVAP system will work correctly.

    Your best bet is to buy a little PCV cone filter - or just anything that will allow fresh filtered air in. I wouldn't recommend plugging it up.

    i had my injen cold air intake for 3 years and no CEL and it works great. people that get CEL is because they dont reset their ECU.
    i think you worry too much for just a CAI. not to get me wrong it is great that you do your research. i didnt the same thing.

    hope it helps

    by the way check my website for the pics

    well i believe my problem is solved. the intake i bought came with an outlet to plug in the vacuum hose.

    here's the pic. you can see the outlet on the right side of the tube.

    NOT overkill...I refer to that as doing it right.<br />
    <br />
    Uh...those hoses go to your evaporative emission control system...so you need to make sure it's hooked up right. The one that just plugs into the side of the old air box....uh...all I know is that comp. needs filtered air...I can't remember what it goes to, but it is on that spot so it get filtered air.<br />
    <br />
    If you changed the intake tubing size, more importantly the throttle body size then you can have some issues but just putting on that tubing shouldn't. I can see how it might cause it's gonna read the air volume a little bit diff (used to read it in a box now in a less volume capable tube...but with better flow) so yeah.<br />
    <br />
    Just make sure your tubes are hooked up and your MAF is reading correctly...being an 03 it shouldn't be dirty or whatnot...yeah. So that was .00032 helpful right?

    there are really no lines/hoses to unplug except for one - and that is the one u mentioned which is on the side of the oem airbox near the bottom. i just have to unplug that hose and replace it with the red hose u see on the picture. then plug in the red hose to that outlet on the tube that you see on the right side (on the picture). it should work fine. i hope. :)

    mmm...see I don't think that hose is gonna give you driveability probs though...it's like...a vent for the evap sys...but won't set a code...maybe if it's plugged it will...but it needs filtered air...looked and couldn't spot where it went on our puters...course a car came in for some work so I had to stop looking...and there weren't any rollas in the shop at that time...sorry for the little help

    your best bet is to return that puppy coz there's no way around it.
    u can try but it may not work properly. u need to drill hole and u also need to somehow weld that mounting plate on the tube so u can mount the maf sensor.
    03+ corollas are known to get CEL when u install intakes. 03 and 04 are not so bad but 05 and up are quite well known for this problem. 03/04 have different intakes than 05 and up. 05 and up have DBW and the intake tube is longer compared to 03/04.
    a good company that makes intakes for 03+ corollas is www.cosmoracing.com
