Who is getting the best MPG?

I wanted to try something with this post and see if we can all come together to see who is getting the best gas milage and more importantly, WHY! So, please post your mileage below along with the year/transmission/oil used information. I will start:

I have owned my 2005 Corolla S (Manuall transmission) since 9/10/2004 (just over 12 months now) and I have kept a record of every gas purchase along with records of every oil change and tire rotation. I bought the car off the dealer lot with 8 miles on the odometer. The car only has 12K miles on it and is going on it's third oil change. I broke the car in on the factory oil fill till around 573 miles. I then changed the oil/filter and switched to Mobil 1 5W30 oil and a Mobil 1 filter. I then change the oil/filter again at 4,860 miles with the same oil/filter combo and then again at 10,131 miles. The plan is to change the oil/filter every 5,000 miles and to rotate the tires with every oil change.

For 10 months, I drove mostly city stop/go to/from work roughly 7 miles one-way with very little highway driving. I have since moved 48 miles one-way from my office.

My best mileage to date is 44.2MPG. This was achieved with slow shifting (Not surpassing 2,800 RPMs) from stop lights/signs and not surpassing 65 MPH EVER. To me, this is a huge "bite my tounge" deal since I love spirited driving. However, the purpose of owning the Rolla is simply a commuting car and I have made it my objective to get the best mileage possible. Playing around with the cruise control, I have found that setting it between 58-60MPH has provided the best results. As a final tactic, I often pop the car in neutral on long downhill descents, often coasting as long as 1.5-2.0 miles at idle (roughly 1,000 RPMs).

I plan on starting to experiment with acetone as a gas additive (do a google search) and will report back with my results.

So, what are your driving habbits and best MPG results?

i drive no slower than 80mph. it is very rare when i have to slow down. usually i have to slowdown for construction or a CHP. but orther than that it's usually right around 80-95mph. i work late nights so thier is hardly no traffic at all. i usually fill up when my gauge reaches close to the 1/4 to E mark or when the fuel light goes on. and it's usually needs approx 9-10 to fill her up. and i always reset my OD. when i go for gas my OD reads right around 300-320 miles. so i would think that's like 300mpg here how i figuard it out.
300 miles/by 10gallons= 30mpg. right??? 03 corolla S auto. using nothing special all oil changes done by the dealer so far because of free coupons i have. i have tried a k&n filter but i does nothing for mpg horse power. only sounds louder but that's it. an expensive noise maker IMO.

I get around 250 miles on my tank doing city driving. I have a intake and a trd muffler and an automatic wit rims and subs. I run about 25mpg with average driving and flooring it in some places. On the highway i get like 38 i think going 80-85 going through mountains and what not

I fill the tank till the gas pump clicks and then put 2 more gallons in. Best mileage I ever got was 450 miles on 11 gallons driving at a constant 65 across the UP of Michigan, so thats a little more than 40 mpg. I figure squeezing in the extra 2 gallons after the pump clicks gets me at least 70 more miles between fill-ups.

My commute is 48 miles one-way ... I do 90% highway miles ... highway speeds on back roads with mostly gently rolling hills with 1 fairly steep incline. Like I said, I rarely shift past 2,500 RPMs, set cruise control at no higher than 60MPH and coast a lot (downhill and approaching red lights/stop lights). It's all about slow and stead as she goes ... brake and accelerate gently. I too fill the tank till it cuts off, then I top off the tank. The needle normally goes about 1/8" past the full mark and I can easily get 100 miles before the needle drops to F. 300 miles on a 1/2 tank is common on my 05 Corolla ... it's all in how you treat the skinny pedal ;)

Like I said, this is my commuter car and the goal is get the most mileage as possible, it's not about being tight with my money. But if you must know, we are a single income family with a stay at home mom with a 2 year old son. So, if I can save some money on the drive to/from work, I plan on it. In the end, it all evens out considering my other cars are:

    1999 Mercury Cougar
    1997 Ford Explorer V8 AWD

Every car in my stable has a VERY well defined purpose.

2005 Toyota Corolla = strickly commuting car with rare vacation trip travel
1997 Ford Explorer V8 AWD = wife's daily driver with occasional tow duty for the track car
1999 Mercury Cougar = Race built (all forged interanals 9:1 CR) 3.0L V6 + Turbo

Ouch, that sounds painful. Hope you lube up well, or you'll damage your internals with those forged interanals...

Kidding aside, you seem to do pretty well with your mileage...

If I drive very painstakingly, I can get 43mpg on a trip from Oklahoma City to Dallas, TX. However, I have to be prepared for all the jerks that insist on going 15 over the limit in any lane at any time.

Getting high mileage in the city takes really special techniques, like "pulse and glide", very gentle acceleration, decelerating early, and generally being an annoyance to the SUV drivers out there.

I wouldn't mess with additives like acetone. The jury isn't in yet, but it seems like this is not the way to go.

Since I switched back to my steelies, I gained mad gas milage. Up from 250-280 per tank to 330 - 350.

I might be able to manage another pint before it starts spilling out onto the ground... if you're able to add two gallons after the automatic shutoff, you ought to make sure that fuel isn't just spilling over somewhere where you can't see it...

    Two gallons... wow...

It's not good to overfill. You run the risk of fuel getting into your charcoal canister and contaminating it.

    ok... averages...

when i'm driving it mostly to and from work, i get... 33-36 MPG (its all city, stop and go, all the roads are 35 except for the last mile or two).. when my wife drives it mostly, i think she's been getting around 45. Thats a 96 DX (1.8 7A-FE), Auto, intake, headers, exhaust, and 2 12's in the trunk (not to mention a car full of shit, she keeps that damn thing trashed up and it pisses me off!). my personal best was... prolly about 45-46, went 380-400 miles on 8-8.5 gals... its hard for me though, to coast...

and those who complain about 25 MPG (and should complain)... my Impala has been getting... 17-19 MPG in town. try filling up for $45 just to go 280 miles. sucks balls.

2003 CE - 5 speed. 43,000kms. Vibrant Performance axle back muffler. stock wheels/tires. 5w-30 oil.

Summer - 320 to 350 kms. for half a tank of gas.
Winter - 300 kms. for half a tank.

You know, all this talk of "half a tank of gas" is somewhat misleading. Why not perform actual MPG or Km/L calculations instead of basing it on nebulous information like what the needle says is half a tank, etc. The gauge is more of an estimate in the first place, and the "first half" tank seems to always be inflated. What really counts is a properly performed fuel mileage calculation. Fill the tank until it stops automatically, do not try to "top off", drive until you feel like you should put fuel in, then fill up again until it stops automatically. Then take the distance driven since the last fillup and divide that by the amount of units of fuel you had to put back in.

Most gas stations have pads that are pretty much level. There would have to be a huge amount of pitch to make any difference in the reading of the gauge. You'll see it climbing or descending hills, but not at the gas station.

For the same reasons properly selected alloy rims will increase the vehicle's performance, the same rims should yield better mileage. Note that the Toyota Prius, the Honda Insight, and the Honda Civic Hybrid all have alloy wheels. They are using these wheels to improve the fuel economy even further.

Best ever is 43mpg highway. However, with any highway driving I usually average a solid 40mpg. Around town - usually never any lower than 35mpg city, and if I drive nicely, then 38mpg city is what I can expect.

Of note: on these cars, the way the car is sitting can make a HUGE difference as far as how much fuel you can get into the tank. If the car is facing DOWNHILL, you can get in an extra 1-1 1/2 gallons before the pump clicks off. Facing UPHILL, you'll see about a gallon LESS before the pump clicks off. On these cars with mileage figure this high, that corresponds to a pretty big difference in mileage calculations. If you've ever heard that it's important to go to the same station and even the SAME PUMP - that's because it is. It's also important that you go at the same time of day, since fuel expands and contracts with temperature changes (density of the fuel is higher in the mornings after it has cooled down overnight).

I thought aluminum rims would yield BETTER fuel mileage than steel wheels - they are lighter and cause less drag...right or wrong??

Perhaps you're in a different area. Around here (SW VA/NE TN), terrain is mountainous and the pumps are rarely on level ground, so a different pump at the same station will change the amount of fuel you can get into the tank.

I can squeeze 40 mpg on the highway driving about 75 with no sudden acceleration

i get phatetic 20 - 25 mpg driving in the city (Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan) but its always been like that what do you expect having stop signs and traffic light every 1/4 mile?

I have a 1995 DX with header, full custom cat back, no cat, intake reaching the headlights, ASP pulley, and iridium plugs. Due to gas prices i run on 87 octane, use Vavoline 5 - 30 synth oil for engines over 75k.

I drive 60 miles one way to work......I have a moddded/chipped 1.8T Passat, and I get 32.1 mpg on average when driving to work, all highway miles at about 75mph the entire way.

16 gallon tank=about 500 miles to the tank.....I fill up 2-3 times a week at about 45 bucks a tank.

03 corolla S manual w/ shell synthetic blend oil changed every 3k miles:

i WAS getting an average of 33-35 mpg in combined city/highway driving (mostly highway cuz my work is 28 miles away). I actually averaged 42mpg on the way back from nopi in atlanta last month cuz i was just cruising around 70mph usually with the a/c off cuz it was nice out.

I say that i WAS getting that mileage cuz that was before I installed my nitrous system. I have to run premium gas now and had to replace the stock plugs with Zex plugs specifically designed for nitrous/turbo/supercharger applications. I used to get around 450 miles to a tank and now I can barely get 350. Before anyone says it - no it's not cuz I'm using the nitrous a lot. Only used it a few times to make sure it was working properly and will be takin it to the track friday. WEAK!
