chainless bicycle

I thought this was pretty cool when I saw it.. chainless bicycle. They use a driveshaft along the frame tube, and all the gearing is on the hub.. No more slippage, no more chain falling off, probably has really good torque, less times getting it retuned.. I'd love to try one (that and a recumbent)

Very intriguing... after reading all that, I kinda want to ride one too now.

expensive? the least expensive one is like $580.. You'd pay that for a decent Trek mountain bike, but this one is practically maintenance free and more efficient. I'd give up my trek for that.

Yeah..I dunno about that little to no maintenance claim. It still has many moving parts besides the drive shaft.

I guess so...but I wasn't talking about that. What I was talking about were things like the rims, cables, brakes, shocks.

Another thing...it says that each gear change from the internal hub is like changing 2-3 gears on a regular chain bike...won't that mean that the gears are now really tall?

I've always hate twist grip shifting. Especially on a mountain bike.

However, I still want to ride this bike and test it out for myself.

yeah but the gearbox is sealed (which means you'll be less likely to need a tune-up or get any foreign material in the gears), plus much like my trek it doesn't have set positions for the gear (which means you just twist until it hits the next gear). Chains are always oily and are known for dust collectors since their moist, so a drive-shaft would not only be cleaner but it would transmit the torque better by design (you wouldn't see cars using chains to replace driveshafts)

That's a nice bike. They've been around for some time actually. I can recall seeing the first one in the late 80's when I was really into bicycles (hey...no driver's licence...what else did u expect?) What's an even better idea is the automatic shift bicycle from Mercedes...

    And the all-wheel drive bicycle...

Now can you imagine a bicycle with all three technologies?? Shaft maindrive, auto tranny and AWD!

I remember autobikes on informercials in the late 90's.. I think they didn't take off because (and I know I'm not alone in this), but many people stand to pedal and not just sit, and if it's shifting in the middle of you pedaling, as soon as it switches gears, your foot would probably fall quickly (sorta like not shifting right away in a real car but revving it then letting go of the clutch). I mean unless that mercedes bike uses a cognant cone gearbox (unlimited gear ratio) so there's not really any shifting. I happen to know that the mercedes bike goes for about $4k because I saw it on cops. They had a bike theft ring (basically set it out and wait for someone to steal it), and I love the one kid's excuse "Oh, I thought it was mine.. someone stole my roadster bike", and the cop is like "how the eff do you confuse a roadster bike for a mercedes? they look nothing alike!"

I should hope that all those fancy electronics in the Merc would have sensors (I'm thinking a sensor in the seat as per seat-belt buckle-up warning lights) that detect when the rider is out of the saddle and hold the gear until the rider sits back down. I've had that happen to me on a manual shifter with a weak derailleur...NOT a good thing for sure!

    AWD bike

My buddy was sponsored by the AWD bike guys, THAT was a REAL mountain bike ! He let me ride it, interesting to say the least. You guys are just throwing money away of you spend less than $600 on a hardtail or 800-1000 on a full suspension if you actually plan to go offroad, the cheaper ones just don't stand up to abuse of real offroading :)
