got a question, my alternator went dead on friday, i dragged my rolla basicaly power dead to an empty street in manhattan where it died quietly, i got it towed to pepboys and quickly replaced the alt with bosh remanufactured one, now the power is great, but my battery keeps discharging and keep asking ppl for boost using the jumper cables, when i drained my battery completly did i damage it? it only 1 year old, got it in strauss auto last summer. I think my warranty just ran out. What do I do? suggestions? did they give me a bad alt? i mean its 100% better than the old one, the lights don't tim when i run full ac and stereo, and car seems to gotten better start, but why does the battery die???

You could always charge the battery, then disconnect the battery terminals. Check the voltage later (like after the same amount of time you would have ordinarily found the battery dead.) If it is still at a normal level (around 12.55V) after that time, you may have some kind of short or an accessory is draining power-- dome light, trunk light, radio, amp, etc. If it is at an abnormally low level after that time, the battery itself is to blame.

Yes indeed. It is possible that the battery has been damaged by this ordeal. Take it back to Strauss and get it checked out. Don't know about your area but even the small bettery shops around here will check it for free.

FYI: Never wonder how a new machine fails. Just like humans they are perhaps expected to live for time T, but some don't, for whatever reason.

well i bought a new battery at BJ's Wholesale for just 40 bux, and its been like a week and no problems, I took the old one to strauss where I purchased it, asked if i can replace it since it has a 75month warranty... well i lost my receipt, I asked them if they can pull me out from computer records, answer: we would but only if you hade the battery installed here - dumb, why would i pay some fresh out of mechanics school dumb ass to put new battery in and charge me for it sice i can do it myself.... so now i have a 25 lb paperweight, anyone interested?

You should have tested the old battery before just replacing it-- you'd have felt like the dumbass if the problem still manifested itself. That's one reason they have specific conditions under which the warranty will be honored, so that way when some raceboy who thinks he knows more about cars than someone with specific training screws something up, they don't have to bear the brunt of raceboy's mistakes.

what yr is your car? The alt going out is a common problem 93-95 corollas with the AC Delco alternator

-beauty of this country: everything is returnable, well almost, but if i bought that new battery and it still kept dying on me, I'd take the car back to Pep Boys and todl them to get it right this time, and return the Batery to BJ's Wholesale and told them its defective i know it was the alternator, all the symptoms were there and i checked the connections and cable and all were fine so only thing was - the battery went dead.

hey Nocpan... btw... Pep Boys will do a free battery check for u (u forget, me james and casey were Fanny Hoe and Crack and some point in time)... they charge for a diagnostic, but, if u got the alternator installed there and u were having problems, then they better not charge u for it.. i know this is after the fact..

after u alternator dies and it drains ur battery, its not gonna kill ur battery, unless it was time to be buried anyways.

like i said, it was a dead battery, i'm kicking myself now cause i went to strauss who sold me the battery like 14 months ago, and asked them if they horor the warranty (75 months) and they said no without the receipt which i didn't have, so I tossed the dead battery.

Yesterday while cleaning I found the damn receipt

News to me. I guess the 3 alternators on as many cars (two of them Toyotas) were flukes.

Change the battery when you change out the alternator. It'll save you a bunch of time and hassle later on.

I shot the bearings out the end of my alternator and blew battery acid all over the engine compartment when I did mine (I broke it goooood! lol).

But keep in mind that if you have any other problems, there's a chance you could have a faulty alternator. A lot of the ones you buy are refurbished and sometimes they still have issues.
