    Forum Grammar & Word Usage Check

    I'm AR and a few of these things have been bugging me lately.
    Soooooo...

    Okay people, help me out here with your own examples.

    There - Used to describe that place, point, or point in time.
    Their - Possesive, relating to them or themselves
    They're - "they are"

    Brake - It's what's on your car.
    Break - It's what I'll secretly do to your car if you don't use these two words correctly (joh-king, joh-king)

    Break - what unions give you for 15 minutes so you don't complain

    its - shows possession of a thing
    it's - conjugation of it is

    fubar - a totaled car: fucked up beyond all recognition
    stfu - shut the fuck up
    also see: stfubikya: shut the fuck up before I kick your ass

    N00b - you on your driving test

    pass/fail credit - what you must do when you barely pass psychology and need to boost your GPA in college

    aorta - verb phrase - "Aorta mow the grass on the ballfield before some kid gets hurt"

    Seriously, there are some things people say incorrectly that really gets to me:

    "different than" -- Incorrect. Correct phrase is "different from".
    "try and catch me", "try and start the engine", etc. -- Incorrect. The correct phrase is "try to". This is because "trying" does not imply success. If success were guaranteed, the imperative would be "Start the engine" or "Catch me." The starting of the engine is dependent on the success of trying. (Contrast to "run and jump" or "dance and sing". The action of running and the action of jumping are both requested, but the jumping does not depend on successful running.)

    Then of course we get the you're/your homonyms.
    You're -- contraction of you are
    Your -- possessive of you.

    Important acronyms seen on the internet:BOHICA -- Bend Over, Here it Comes AgainFOSSIL -- Fido-Opus-Seadog Standard Interface LayerRTFM -- Read the &*#%ing ManualSTFW -- Search the &*#%ing WebLODASM -- Logged On Dressed as Sailor Moon19FTexas -- 47-year Old Pockmarked Man in Bathrobe in WisconsinLOL -- Laughing Out LoudLOLOLOLOL -- Goddamn, I'm a Retard

    yeah dude, I feel ya on the "their/there/they're" deal. It kinda makes you look stoopid when you dont use them correctly the " its" thing always screws me up because the rules are ass backwards...like "dog's" shows possessive but "its" shows possessive without the" ' "

    here's one that few people know (I think) ..it is incorrect to use "they" or "that" in reference to something you previously talked about, like at the beginning of a sentence. Idefinite pronoun usage or somethin'!

    here are some good ones...so in rural PA you may hear these:

    warsh= to wash something
    walmark= retail store founded by sam walton
    death=the condition where one has hearing impairment or loss
    wood pussy= skunk
    pobly= pooly speak for "probably"

    there are many more I just can't think of them. later I'll explain what a "poole" is...

    You can also use "dog's" as a contraction of "dog" and "is", such as in "The dog's in the backyard" or "the dog's begging again." So, it's not exactly as counterintuitive as you might think.

    Around here I often hear Wal-Mart pronounced as "Wal-Marts."
