Making noise, what do you think?

My 02 corolla has about 50k miles on it. Everything is stock. Never had any problems or anything, power is good. I've been noticing a rattling noise between 2500 and 3000 rpm during acceleration. The first thing I think of is pinging... I'm convinced it's coming from inside the engine because it's only between 2500 and 3000 rpm during acceleration. I think the gas I use is good, the engine temp is fine. Maybe dirty valves?

I checked for any loose parts that may have been rattling. I've been using regular gas, even filled up on supreme once and it still happened.

Does anyone know what's going on and how to remedy it?
    Thanks

Could be a heat shield by the exhaust manifold or between the cat and the body...

Perhaps timing chain (tensioner??). These engines are not notorious for their quietness anyhow.

Unless the engine is FULLY warmed up (like 30 minutes of driving or so), then you could be hearing piston slap. My 2003 corolla does the same thing. It's worse if you feather the gas pedal.

Everything is stock? Aren't you ported your header? :p
check the header and heat shield, maybe just something loose.

mine has made a rattle from 2500ish rpm to 3000 since i got it, another owner of the same year 02 rolla at work had the same rattle, he took it in and for 600 bucks they tighten some magical bracket i cant find that is supposedly near the a/c unit that causes the rattle

I need to find that bracket and charge only $450... I could make a killing!

Isn't accessing that bracket covered somewhere in the Mitchell Flat Rate Guide? You wonder how they spent 10 hours (at $60.00/hr) to get to that bracket to tighten it... someone got ripped off...

i have that noise and mine is piston slap(which some one mentioned). its caused the pin holding the piston to the connecting arm being bent. the mechanic told me it was ok to drive it like that as long as it didn't get a lot worse. the mechanic also tried replacing the timing belt tensioner first (apparently its a common problem) but it didn't help. luckily he didn't charge me for that.
