better / upgrading back up lights? aux lights??

Hi my wife has a 2004 Corolla-S and as you know our back up lights suck they are 2 - 921 bulbs, normally used for the third brake light, while backing out in a parking lot, a shopping center etc...it is terrible, many folks are rude and many just do not see her trying to get out of a parking place...also as you know the rear of the car, really does not leave much in the way of mounting a light and having it not look like it was off a 4x4,

any upgrades to the 921?? no PIAAs or blue bulbs , please...

    How bout LED 921s??

I may take one of these clear oval LED lights and mount it facing down, wire it to the reverse lights, add a relay and power to the battery (?)so I was thinking about a surface mounting in the underside lip of the plastic bumper out of site...it would only provide a under light but some light would get out and add to visibility for the driver as well and waking up a few rude drivers to let her out of the parking place, what do ya think??? I could just use the led or neon under lighting tubes??

Well I went with the LED PIAA 19155 rear fog lamp, and added the wiring harness from their #40 reverse light, the switch has a On/ Off/ On with reverse light setting, so the lamp can be on while loading cargo and as a rear fog, and off, for off (?) and on with the back up lights…as a reverse light…

This is the wiring harness I am using as the one that comes with the light has a off/ on switch and would not work for the back up light function…again I am not using this lamp on the Corolla, I am only using the wiring harness from it…

I am talking about the 03, 04 and 05 lights, they suck, no lumens, nada...they are a 921 bulb, mainly used for 3rd brake lights until now...there is no upgrade, so a add on is the only option...

on the 2003 to 2005 you can use:

    Trunk light replaced with 3652

    194, 14V, 2 cp/25 lumens, 2500 hrs 4 watts
    168, 14V, 3 cp/38 lumens, 1500 hrs 5 watts
    3652, 13.5V, 6 cp/75 lumens, 700 hrs 5 watts

HIR 9011 to replace the 9005 Hi beam $30
    http://www.hirheadlights.com/ (best alternative to HID)
you can use also go Phillips euro 9006 HV (clear and 50% better than stock and 20% more than US version the Xtravision) $10
H-3AW Narva (AW is all weather) in the fogs $8

    9006 - 55 watts - 1000 lumens
    9005 - 65 watts - 1700 lumens

    9012 - 55 watts - 1870 lumens
    9011 - 65 watts - 2350 lumens

    FYI the HIDs

    D2R HID capsule - 35 watts - 2800 lumens

Older Corollas: many have had a different bulb and you could upgrade it:

Many older ones use an 1156 use a direct fit 3497 can even use in the turn sigs.

even better backup light replacement for 1156 is 796. 35W halogen, only 7W more than stock 1156 (27W) but WAY more light, because of the raise and fall, or the quickness of the lights off and on do not use 796 in turn sigs.
    See:
    796: 60 candlepower draw 35 watts
    3497: 45 candlepower draw 27 watts
    1156: 32 candlepower draw 27wattts

If you use an 1157 for Brakes and running use a direct fit 3496

    3496: 43/4 candlepower 27/8 watts
    1157: 32/3 candlepower 27/8 watts
    2057: 32/2 candlepower 27/8 watts

For a 194 commonly used for license plates use a 2825
    Or for amber use 2827*

PIAA lights and housings are fine, the bulbs are a rip...
PIAA bulbs are over rated and over priced, they are not brighter and only marginally whighter as they have the coating on them, when you coat the bulb you loose light, lumens, candlepower, etc....

and even then 2 921s are not enough light...
