    Lets talk Tires

    So, what does everyone run?

I decided to go with Falken 512s...rated number one by Consumer Reports for all season, ultra high performance. Good tread ratings.....50k limited warranty, good price under 100. Falkens are also decalared very quiet tires as well. (225/45/17s on 17X7 rims)

I wanted the Continentals, then the Yokohama Avids, but the yokos arent made in the size I want, and contis are on backorder for 10 weeks. And the kumho asx are on backorder for at least two months as well!

well i just ordered my rims and tires from my job so in a few days i will be running Yoko AS430 (NTB exclusive)...i was torn between those and the falken ze512's but the yoko's have a better treadwear rating...plus i get a CRAZY discount on them :D

btw right now i've got BF Goodrich Traction T/A's (195/60/14) and i must say they are EXCELLENT all season tires...didn't slip once in all the snow this winter, and they're actually performance tires

Ziex 512's are by far the best option for all seasons tires, best thing about them is they are dirt cheap.

    Summer tires I like
    Falken Azenis RT215 (discontinued)
    Kumho MX
    Toyo Proxes T1S
BFG KDW (KD are best but more expensive)

Other excellent tires, however not pratical
    Michilen Pilot PS2
    Potenza RE010

    Racing tires I've driven on.
Kumho Victory Racer V700 (for solo)
    Toyo RA1 (for HPDE)

Ive looked at the Yokos as well....but you cant compare the treadware ratings between different companies, because each company does their own testing.

I have 512's on the beater that I bought new not more thatn two months ago. I like them a lot, but I have read that they need to be rotated religiously if not they will wear out unevenly very fast. Since they are directional this means they can only be rotated back/front every 5K miles.

Wear out unevenly? A tire will wear out unevenly if the contact patch is uneven on the road, or the alignment is is off, or if the tires are balanced improperly. Otherwise, a tire shouldnt wear unevenly...I dont see how it could be possible unless one of the factors above is present.

Well very easily, it all depends where you have your traction, either front wheel drive or rear wheel drive. The tires with the traction will wear out first. In FWD cars that would mean the front tires will wear out first if not rotated in a schedule. Second, the front tires are subjected to other wear patterns since they also encounter lateral forces when you move the steering wheel.

Yes I said unevenly, and it is not a hard concept to visualize. If you feel like reading some more on the subject then this is a good link:

    http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=43

So if you want even tire wear then rotate your tires, if you wish to replace two tires while the other two are still at half life, then do not rotate your tires.

What you are thinking of is having one side of the tire wear out more than the other. What I am talking about is having two tires wear out faster than the other two if not rotated.

I hope this has enlightened you. :p

Thanks for the sarcasm in your "enlightening" of me, but it wasnt needed. In your first post, you made it seem like the Falkens had uneven tire wear, more so than any other tire out there.

Its obvious that if you dont rotate your tires, your tires will wear unevenly between the tires. (Front to back, back to front.) You need to rotate your tires, no matter what brand or style your running. The Falkens arent any worse than any other tire out there, in regards to the situation that you are referring to.

Its obvious from my post, and your reply, that you knew that I was implying to each individual tire having uneven tire wear, and not uneven tire wear from not rotating.

You misunderstood my post, I misunderstood your post.

the kumho ASX is a better-than-allseason allseason tire. very quiet, good grip, good treadwear. i put 5 autoXes on my last set, and very spirited driving, and got decent mileage out of them..

    now i'm on kumho V700's.. can anyone say 60 treadwear? :D :D :D

60 treadwear? Whow...they would last me one round trip to work. hehe.

I need something with a high treadwear, in addition to a high performance cuz i put so many miles onmy tires to and fro work......I have a winter set of tires, but ya never know when youll get hit with a freak snow storm around here.

Joel, whyd you have all season tires?

Yes, that is what I meant in my first post, it seems that 512's do wear out a lot faster than other tires if not rotated regularly. I am on another car forum where a lot of people have used the 512's with mixed results. Most people have complained of uneven wear and most of it had to do with them skipping a rotation or two. Some people have also complained/reported that the 512's being an all season tire have softer sidewalls making them squeal under force when cornering. Also people have noted that the 512's do not have that crisp turn in that other tires have, specially summer tires. But that is always the price you pay with high mileage tires.

I did use the :p so it's good that you caught it was sarcasm. Regardless hopefully someone got some good information out of these posts.

    I've got yokohama Avid H4s 205/45-16s.
    http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...045HR6H4S&index=1&vIndex=0&vehicleSearch=true

After getting used to low profile tires I really like them. They do ok on ice and snow. Haven't had much time driving in the rain with them yet. They seem to grip well, and the handling has improved a bit, much less sidewall flex. The ride is a little harsh compared to 14 stocks, but it's not bad for low pro.
    I'm happy with them.
