i'd still say corolla. sure, the civic has aftermarket support, but you'd be lucky to get power windows/locks and a/c(i think that's still an option...).

overall, you'd pay MORE for the civic for a less-than-great car.

what about speed millage and dependabillity

well in auto speed isnt really an issue because it doesnt have much to speak of... but millage and dependability is what the rolla is made for...

that's what the civic is made for, too.

the only way you'd really come out on top is if you were to get a hybrid civic.

though, guys, it's mileage...

so the corolla corolla gets better gas millage over the civic, even the v-tech???
because millage is a big factor, if i wanted a fast car believe me i wouln'd have gotten a corolla.

my friend is looking to buy a new a car. i suggested he get a rolla, but he says civic is better. what do you guys think?
cars must be equal. same all around. i.e. lx vs lx, ce vs ce. and so on.

if he's getting a manual, the corolla clutch is a little more forgiving...and corollas come with more standard. insurance is generally higher on a civic, as well.

it's MILEAGE.

anywhat...let's take a look at the specs for both, eh?

CIVIC:
-for all coupes and sedans, you're looking at either 115, 117, or 127HP at the CRANK. that's either slower or essentially equal to the Corolla.
-for the SI hatchback, it's 160
- gas MILEAGE for civic ranges from 36 in city/44 highway to 26 city/31 highway miles per gallon.
- barely anything is standard on the Civic...in fact, if you look at autos.msn.com , you'll notice that the ONLY thing standard is seating for 5. that means everything - air conditioning, power windows and locks, radio, EVERYTHING is an option - which means your price goes up per option.
- invoice price will range from $12k to $17k+(after dealer markup) - that's not including the Si model, which jumps it up to around $19k before dealer markup.

this car is also confusing...there are zillions of trim levels, and it's hard to figure out which has what.

COROLLA:
- 4 trim levels. that's it...4. makes it nice and easy to figure out.
- 130hp at the crank for the ce, le, and s, 170hp at the crank for XRS(though this is only manual).
- gas MILEAGE follows: for ce, s, and le with an automatic trans, you're looking at an average of 30 city, 38 highway. that increases if you get a manual. XRS is set at 26/34.
- standard cd player and a/c...more options for everything else.
- prices are in the same range for everything but XRS.

though, you could have just checked out autos.msn.com to find that out, too

as an added bonus, i checked out a little more of the engine specs.

civic - the least amount of torque you'll get at the crank is 110lbs/ft, with the most set at 132. nothing special there...pretty sluggish, if you ask me. the engines range from a 1.7L to a 2.0L.

corolla - torque is either 125lbs/ft, or 127lbs/ft at the crank. again, kindof sluggish...but because VVT-i is standard on EVERY engine, it's got more low end than high end torque...these cars, stock, generally move quicker off the line than the lowly civic.

tell your friend to go test drive a few of the various civic trim levels, and just one of the corolla trims(since all but the XRS are the same in performance), and tell him to decide for himself.

Since it's a corolla forum, most of us will say corolla I believe.

Mileage: Civic win, since it's 0.1L less displacement than rolla. But since the rolla has more lowend tq, you will drive happier in city.

It is really a toss up. About the only difference would be if she wants a coupe or a sedan. Insurance is higher on a Honda so keep that in mind. Gas mileage is irrelevant since it all depends on how the person drives the car. They are both just as reliable and the build quality is great across the boards.

I would tell your friend to look at both and the first car you come across in great shape, get!

honesty, the 7th gen Civics havent exactly been the greatest as far as build quality, and my 04 is no exception IMO. A base civic coupe looks better than a base corolla I think, but like Laura said, the Civic comes with NO options. On my 04 VP we had to pay extra for A/C and a CD player, which were options and the only ones I have.

I used to drive a 98 civic and I loved it, until I drove a corolla. I started having stuttering accelleration problems around 50k, and I was more cramped in the civic than I am in the corolla (knees would bang console). And the main reason I went with the corolla because it was $14k out the door with A/c and power nearly everything. the civic is at least 14k if not more for a stripped down version. My 2002 has 89k miles on it already and it's still running strong with nothing major replaced other than brakes/tires.

This is true. I have had some small problems with my Civic, but my Corolla also had some small problems. But every car has them.

I would never recommend buying anything but an EX Honda. Sure they cost more, but you get the features.

but why spend more for a car when you can get a car for a little less with the same features standard?

theres just a few fit and finish things I dont like about the civic. The paint, or at least my nighthawk black pearl scratches real easily. The fold down seats use these weird tabs you pull from the trunk to fold them down, whereas in my corolla there was a button on the top of the seat itself making them so simple to fold down (Don't know if this is true of new Corolla's) Another MAJOR peeve with my civic. The gas guage is totally screwy. I mean I can go for a 20 min drive and it will show I have MORE gas than when I left. I can see it jump around on me. Stock tires on the civic are total Junk, however I dont know how bad the Corolla ones are, probably not much better.

The D17 in the civic also doesnt respond AT ALL to bolt on mods. While the Civic has more aftermarket support, I think the 1ZZ in the Corolla is better from a modding standpoint. You can't really go wrong with either car though.

The EX civic is pretty nice, but for that price theres other cars I'd rather get for that price.

My car's seats fold down when you put the key in the rear deck. Stock tires on most every car are junk for that matter, but stock Civic's and Corolla's aren't going require anything special.

The D17 actually is slower if you add the "Placebo" modifications.

It really depends on your tastes.

like mike said, it really comes down to whether he wants a coupe or not. If so, then get the civic. If he wants a sedan then get the Corolla. The Civic Sedan is ugly IMO.
