Why are they killing the Celica and MR2?

Just wondering... are they going to be replacing them with something awesome or more family oriented?

And is it bad to buy a model that is on its last year?

NO idea if they'll be replaced. i believe the tC was slated to take the place of the Celica, however.

no, it's not bad to buy on the last year. it's normally a bad idea to buy on the FIRST year.

    hope that helps :)

they're killing them because they're really really overpriced and therefore selling quite badly. also, if you notice the current trend in car buying - most people don't seem to want small coupes anymore, especially 2 seater ones with a corolla engine that cost $25k. Everyone seems to want sedans now. The tC is the only coupe toyota sells now isn't it?

what the hell is toyota thinking? are they trying to kill themselves for the eco-freak green party looneys? I can't think of how toyota will be without any more fun cars.

not that im disagreeing with you - because i dont disagree... but what 300hp car does nissan have? lol or mitsu for that matter. the evo MR is close, but not over the barrier.

as far as i know there are very few cars you can buy with 300+ hp stock and only one is an import (subaru WRX STi) - the others are domestics like the mustang GT, ford GT, corvette, GTO, magnum RT, Charger RT.

Of course then there's the various euro-imports that have 300+ but they're all like 50k and up lol benz

as much as I'd like to agree, I can't.

what toyota is doing actually makes sense. Think about the overall market for cars like the MRS, the Supra when it was being made, and the Gen I and II MR-2's. Were they great cars, YES!....did they sell well and were they really profitable... Not at all! Toyota realizes that they can make a ton more money off of the cars they are selling now (I.E. camry's / Corolla's) then they could ever make with a sportscar. They just dont see the point in taking a chance on sportscars that arent that profitable when they are doing awesome with their bread and butter grannymobiles.

I think they want make the celica and MR2 rare,so they cost alot in the near future like the supra...and right now the scion xA,xB and TC is taking over the import scene for toyota.

will new 2005 celicas and mr2s get cheaper as the 2006s come out? and fal could you explain why it isn't bad to buy the last year of a car... it seems like that would mean they are putting their minds somewhere else

    i want an mr2, sadly

just because they're ending it doesn't mean they're discounting quality on the vehicle...the production won't change just for the end of it.

i meant all other 2006s... will the 2005 celicas and mr2s go down in price (more so than other 2005s still on the lot) because of their decision to make it the last year? or would it go the other way... they would get more expensive as the supply drops.

nope...not likely. Celicas are way too commonplace, and they knew there would be a limited run of MR2s to begin with.

just as i expected.. toyota pawned off the last of the 2zz to the corollas so that they wouldnt have to deal with anymore performance oriented cars.

    toyota is going mad pussy....

    SUPRA replaced by = SOLARA

    MR2 TURBO 200+ = MR2 Spyder 130hp

there are others im sure but im tired and i dont feel like doing the research, im just trying to prove that toyota is going pussy

seriously how can you say your flagship sports car has only 165hp(Tc) when other manufactures such as nissan and mitsubishi have 300 hp cars as their flagships?

haha true, Toyota should have left that one alone for a couple more years! :p but I think the MR2 spyder is more of a pussy than the celica, not that there is nothing wrong with that.

It's about economics pure and simple. You can't forget toyota is just another faceless corporation in a capitalist economy, they did not get to be the #1 most profitable japanese car manufacturer by marketing to us.. Only thing we could do if we want a nice performance car is buy from a manufacturer that makes performance oriented cars. ie Subaru, Nissan, Mazda, even Honda/Acura to a extent.
