Yes, but it will also cause white smoke to constantly bellow out the rear of the car. I still remember the time I pulled 6 quarts out of a fricking old Subaru that had the horizontal engine.

    Need help with engine noise.

My 01 Corolla just started making this noise 2 days ago, it sounds kind of like something large stuck in the fan or a really loud engine ping. There is no performance loss but its going through 2 1/2 quarts of oil every 3000 miles. when you start it in the mornings a big cloud of gray smoke comes out.

also there is nothing that i can see stuck in either of the fans, so i am guessing its the engine.. any ideas?

    thanks for the help.

How many miles and what maintenance record you got on there? Such severe oil consumption would cause it to ping. It could be a leaking head gasket, worn valve seals or worn out piston rings/cylinders... Piston slap can be heard when engine is cold.

You need to check the oil pressure. That'll give you an idea of what kind of shape the bearings are in without actually tearing it down.

Idle - 15psi, 3000rpms should be 45-75psi....this is when fully warmed up (i.e., driven for about 30 minutes to get the best picture). Usually hangs around 80psi on a cold start/high idle.

Thanks for the help so far guys, it has 65000 miles on it and oil is changes by jiffy lube every 4-5000 miles with 1 or 2 top offs in between, I run a synthetic blend. Also the noise only happens on reving through the gears when crusing at a constant speed there is no noise.

Actually, oil burning is usually white/gray with a bluish tint. Pure white is usually coolant burning (read: failed head gasket). If you are burning coolant through the head gasket, then you'd probably be overheating also due to hot exhaust gases being forced into the coolant.

Very dark or black smoke indicates fuel (i.e., rich mixture).

Timing chain tensioner possibly....low on oil....

Since the noise is only on acceleration, it makes me think it could have something to do with the tranny.

    Who knows, though...

The noise has gotten worse, its pretty much all the time. Could it be a bad spark plug or timing issue? As soon as I get enough money i will take it to Toyota to diagnose, i just want to be prepaired..for the worst.

Are 1ZZ-FE con rods the weak spot? Seems like I hear a lot of people talk about throwing rods on thr 1ZZ's. My 2003 Corolla with 55,000 miles gets driven REALLY hard sometimes....is this something I should be afraid of? I mean, I redline the engine daily...usually several times...it's never made a strange noise or acted odd or anything, but is this something that just "happens" out of the blue on these engines??

yeah. something is up with your engine...perhaps one of the head gasket has a major leak. You better take it in and let them rip you off. better than you telling what to fix... and not fixing anything in the first place.

That's f***ed. Oil pressure on my '03 is usually around 50-55psi @ 3000rpms and usually rises to about 65si and holds from 4000rpms-redline. Sign of trouble or not??

My 01 makes a knocking sound from about 2-3,500 rpms. Usually it's worse under acceleration, it is not an all the time event either. But it is very frequent. I keep it away from redline, usually no higher than 4k. But I don't know how the p.o. treated it. I've got about 75-76k on the odomoter too. No mods.
