    real pulley power??

hey guys i had a question concerning the aem underdrive pulley kit. i know these kits sometimes work for cars and sometimes dont. i was wondering if it made any difference in the horsepower (i have an 05 corolla s). any comments or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

if your going to get a pully system i would highly suggest the UR underdrive pullies best on the market...dyno proven to add signifigant hp...ps UR is unorthodoxed racing

the aem kit only replaces the alternator pulley. ive read that it doesnt necessarily GIVE you hp but rather it frees up hp. when i read about it it seemed logical but you guys have more experience than me and i was wondering if this was true or if its jsut an $80 gimmick.

i could have sworn underdrive pulleys don't do anything beneficial to the corolla...

They're not worth the gains and you risk blowing your engine because they don't have a harmonic balancer on the underdrive crank pulley. Just read up on newcelica.org about everyone who blew their engine because of the UR pulleys.

Yeah, all the bearings were worn out and several Celica owners had thier oil pumps go up.

It's not internally balanced. 4 bangers have a lot of harmonic distortion. You really risk damaging your motor when combining your turbo with the underdrive pulley. Even the guy at the speed shop by me took his out because it's not worth the gains and risk to the motor. Take a look at your crank pulley and you'll see there's a thin piece of rubber sandwiched in there.

I have some pulley's for sale for 98-02 if anybody wants them.
But also my friend has a 02 spec v with the underdrive pulley and it drives just fine for over 20k miles now.

I took the alt pulley off because I wasn't getting enough power for the car to run optimally. It also caused my alternator to die prematurely and I had to have it replaced.

I got the UR set(crank and alt) and just used a camry-sized battery to offset the difference. I had them on the old engine for 30K miles(it died of hydrolock) and on the new engine for 17K miles. No problems so far. There is some power gains, but mostly the ability to keep rpms up, which helps w/ shifting and staying in powerband.

itll take 2% off the life of the car probably maybe not even that.. im not worried.. if it does ever die just gives me an excuse to rebuild a new engine LoL... but really lots of peopel have used them with no problems and the ones that do have there engines die is usually because there oil pumps fail or screw up

But, they also did a teardown of the engines and found that the bearings were abnormally worn out.

Not completely true. The street set is sold with the harmonic balancer (SS). The race set has better gains and does not come with the balancer.

actually the oil pumps failed with peopel who had it and with people who dont have it... therefore its most likely unrelated

I wasn't aware that they made a street set. Interesting.

Thats why I have no probs. Not to say pulleys are end-all-be-all, but theyre nice to have.
