It's true that some mods, like heavy wheels or poorly done/thought out work will make the car slower, but I find that alot of older people just don't like modding in general. They prefer to keep everything original and I guess this journalist falls into that school of thought. I think he's pretty biased saying that "if you don't like the way your car is then buy something else" though.

I would go out and buy a new car like a G35 or an M3, but I don't have the cash for that, so instead, I do things to make my Corolla the car I want it to be.

"What's the use of gaining 0.2 second in the quarter-mile if the car is slower 0-60 mph? And costs $10,000 more?"

    Come on...

Yeah I'd say he's biased. It is an opinion piece. I don't agree with the overall theme.
I'm thinking a lack of knowledge and poor planning produce the negative results he is describing. Yeah he's venting, not a very good opinion in my opinion.

    E-Bay and too many stickers,

What makes no sense is that a suspension done by a large well know company performed better when a part fell off. Right

People often judge handling by how the car rides and acceleration by noise: If it's rough and loud, it's got to handle better and be quicker, they think.
    THE TRUTH..!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think some modding can give poorer results (IE huge chrome rims that are heavier than stock, making it slower at accelerating). and say your an idiot and you eff up your air intake by not resetting the CPU, sure. I thought most of you would get a good laugh from it. I find it hard to believe that professionals would ever do crappy work. It does serve as a guide perhaps that not every punk teen that watches fast & furious is going to be able to run right out and buy parts and install them themself either. really surprised a website like edmunds would write an article like that. perhaps he's tired of making bluebook values for cars when so many modd them :)

I would like to meet someone that put 10k into there car and had it be slower then it was stock. Then I could say I met the most ignorant retarded person that ever lived. Also its not all about speed. I would gladly loose some speed for torque or easy comfortable ride for hard corning. Modding lets the indevidual build the car around their likes and dislikes. Except for the people that throw every APC part on there car just to try and be cool and live with the frusteration of the car not driving right :)

    well if you
put big ass rims then lower the car and put alot of money in audio it may effect the car performance

big rims are HEAVY plus once you install that wide tires it also affect the MPG
add more audio stuff and accesories add weight to the car thats mean braking performance also add more distance in stoping

there are so many thing that people can do wrong in modifying their cars and not many people know how to balance the modification some ppl didnt know that some bigger wheel can be as light as the stock rims but some ppl just wanna go for looks damn BLING2
