A good rule is that a lightweight rim will weigh less than whatever it's diameter is. For example, to be considered lightweight a 16" wheel should weigh less than 16lbs. A lightweight 15" wheel should weigh less than 15 lbs, and so on.

What is considered as "light weight" wheels?

I'm looking for a new set of rims with tires, and there's plenty of talk about getting light weight wheels/rims, rims being too heavy, etc. Problem is, no one really gave their opinion on what is a good weight for wheels of certain sizes. I know there's different weights for 15", 16", etc...but really, I'm very curious about this...more like I'm afraid of getting lower mileage if I get heavier wheels (lol)

So what's your thoughts on weight on a complete set of 15"? 16"? 17"?

    15's... 13 lbs is good

    16's... 13-15 lbs is good

17's... well i know my old exels weighed 20 lbs. i sold them. they were 35 with tires

depends what youre using your car for as to what weight you'll need. i weighed my stockies to be 30 lbs with tires.

sure, carbon fiber rims are used for motorcycles all the time.

there is one company selling rims with the center piece made out of carbon fiber.

Dude, you're giving carbon fiber's strength a little too much credit there. CF wheels are merely CF wrapped.

The tires usually weigh more than the rims anyways

depends on the process. it might cost more or less depending on what the company has to invest in if they never made carbon fiber rims before. it takes skilled people and the right machines.

also carbon fiber can't be worked like metal so the design process differs.

also tradition keeps a lot of companies from switching materials and it is a proven material. carbon fiber has many quality levels (like metal) but a poor quality carbon rim will not do.
