    rx-7 engine in AE86

    Hey, just wondering..

I've heard that an rx-7 engine would fit nicely into a AE86 and was just wondering what the rest of you thought about that. Would it be unrealistically expensive, or reasonable? Cost of labor wouldn't be much at all, since I've got a friend who's really good with engine work who has experience swapping motors. Yea, I was just looking for a fun weekend cage to play around with, and the idea of an rx-7 engine in an AE86 was appealing.

    p.s. Hi everyone, I'm new.

    lol hi :)

There was a rotery in a miata in some magazine i was reading yesterday. The problem with roterys is they are expensive to rebuild. Not sure just to buy it from an engine yard. Also they have lots of maintance.

the 4age is one of the easiest toyota engines to find parts for. don't get rid of it, build it!

that i can't disagree with...the rotaries are much better suited for a fun car, rather than a daily driver.

actually there's a lot appealing about the 13b and 20b..... though the last gen had the thinnest apex seals due to emission reasons (which is what goes out all the time..... and if you have your rotor scrape the inner engine housing you're screwed... it's about as bad as blowing a hole in a cast iron block)..... anyways, they make good power, rev high, and the thing people love about them is they are so compact. You can mount it closer to the firewall than the 4ag sits, and that actually better equalizes the front/rear weight ratio

you would need the rotary motor complete.... some sort of management for it (be it the original rx7 ecu or an aftermarket setup), the rx7 tranny, a custom driveshaft, and new mounts would need to be put in

but it's been done several times..... friend of mine had this plan until an engine importer sent him a mazda 2.5L v6 with automatic FWD tranny, cut harness, and no ecu when he ordered a 13btt with turbo's, ecu, uncut harness, and rwd 5 speed tranny.... then he got an offer he couldn't refuse on the ae86..... stupid importers

correct on the rebuild, false on the maintenance...if it's n/a. if it's turbo, then expect it to last @60k miles...turn up the boost and the seals will blow very easily. if it's a 13B twin turbo, it'll have a real bad heat issue...if it's a 20B i'm killing you and stealing it :)

I have seen this done once. It was an AE86 with a 3-Rotor motor and it was the fastest street car I think I have ever seen. You could be tearin' ass down the road if you do that.

Instead of a RX-7 engine.Go witha SR20 engine.I think it fits, but i think the engine mounts is different.I seen it done before in a magazine 2years ago.

i was just chatting with a few of my friends the other day at the shop and we got onto the topic of the new rx8 and engine and stuff... my friends told me that they were the most reliable engines out there which i tend to disagree with but it would be fun to see that kinda swap take place...

ehhh...the Renesis runs like crap compared to the older Wankels...there's no "fun factor" with the Renesis.

give me an old 13B any day :)
