Is there a way to make the rear defroster turn on with remote start?

Does anyone know if there's a way to get the rear defroster on a 98-02 Corolla to turn on with remote start? Is there a wire I can tap into with my Viper system?

negative, sir. in the 01/02(and i think above) corollas, it automatically turns off if the window heats up too much(it does in mine anyway..) or if you turn off the car.

It's not an ordinary on/off switch, but a momentary on switch, so it's always off unless manually turned on. Then, as faln has said, it automatically turns off after 5 minutes or so.

    vamp!

here's what you do.. use the same signal you use to start the car.. it's a momentary signal, right?

The timer function was a feature of the CE and LE models of the 98, the VEs didn't have it iirc. I remember having to look through the manual at one point and the defroster with timer was an optional feature. Anyways...

Though I don't know much about these systems, I'm going to think about this logically.

You don't want to hit the defrost when you hit the crank; because chances are the system won't take the button, and if it does the added load on the battery wouldn't be a great idea, and if the starter has to try starting the engine more than once that's not going to work well either...

Here's what I think. The *safest* way to do this would be to mod inside the actual starter piece and find the wire that feeds back to say that the engine has started, tap a relay off of that, and run it to the defroster wiring harness and just tap whatever wire is being shorted when you hit the defroster button.

I don't really know of a better way to do this. Wiring directly off of any of the wires in the key harness means any time you turn the car on it would start the defroster (or any time you put it in acc, depending on the wire you use) and you'd also have to find a way to just send a "pulse" when it turns on to hit the momentary switch, because a direct wiring would have the same effect as holding the button down all the time.

The only other thing I can think of is if you have one of those remote models that support something like popping a trunk or something if you tap the wire that would normally trip the solenoid to the momentary wire that is tripped when you hit the wire...then you would just have to remember to hit the "trunk release" (or similar) button after starting the car and the defroster would turn on.

Oh, I know what wire to use on the alarm... it's the wire in the car itself that i'm not sure about. I can't remember if there's an actual wire I can tap into or if the switch is directly connected to a circuit board.

Im not quite sure how the switch mechanism works in there. I think it pops back out after a while, it may be a special timed switch. If it isn't they just use the wires to the switch to a relay then to the remote trigger wire. Then program the alarm to do a momentary signal to switch it.

the switch itself is a momentary switch. all you'd need is to tap that momentary signal. there's no way the timer for the defroster is behind that button..... it's probably nearer to the fusebox.
