Engine Aftermarket Intake/Air Mass Censor

    Aftermarket Intake/Air Mass Censor

    OK, I have a AEM intake for my 2004 Corolla. The Air Mass Censor has gone out twice in the last 6 months. Toyota says is because of the Intake fibers that are doing it. I've never heard of this and Toyota sells and intake almost identical to the AEM style intake. But Toyota Delearship is saying its not cover under warrenty and they actually got a memo from toyota corporate about it. Thoughts??

    has your Air Mass been swearing, or flashing the children?

    you really shouldn't Censor your Air Mass.. it can be bad..

    you should clean your filter often, as well as the MAF.. i bet you anything they're not replacing it. i bet they're cleaning it and putting it back in and charging you for a new MAF..

    if your MAF goes, your car DOES NOT START.

    When the MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR goes out, what happens? What does the engine do? Ping/knock? What? The engine will still run without the MAF sensor, but it will not rev higher than around 3000rpms and is barely driveable at best.

    What fault codes are you pulling?

    I had an AEM CAI on my 2003 Corolla. I ran mine for about 6000 miles and the engine knocked really bad but, IMHO, it's because of very poor designing of the intake tube - in particular, where and how the MAF sensor was mounted on the tube. MAF sensors are touchy and AEM didn't seem to take that into account when designing the tube.

    If this happens again, try taking the sensor out and cleaning it with electrical parts cleaner. I would stay away from the dealer at all costs as they will rip you off - ESPECIALLY when it comes to aftermarket parts.

    If I were you, I'd do my engine and wallet a favor and get rid of the intake.

    And that whole "fibers from the filter" stuff is a load, IMO.

    You're car can start without the MAF sensor. Infact, it is completely safe to drive with a dead MAF. You just won't get any power because it won't let you get pass 3k rpm.

    I hope you're not oiling up the filter. A lot of the times, the oil gets sucked through and damages the sensor.

    lol when you say "oiling up" you mean over-oiling, right?

    please PLEASE don't drive a Gauze type filter without oiling it. you suck dirt directly into your engine.

    the oil will dirty the MAF yes, but just clean it.. duh...

    maybe Injen preoils theres, but mine does not seem to be sucking any dirt in at all. And I don't really see how either, with the pore space being so small, it would seem that only air and fluids can pass.

    high school kids pull into my work once every months, wondering why their MAF sensor just dies. When i pull it out, there is oil all over it. One could only assume the oil shorts out the MAF. Plus, i don't like the idea of oil building up in my throttle body and intake header.

    injen uses K&N filters, which are pre-oiled. you must oil your filter. just don't over-oil it.

    your comment on oil buildup is hilarious, because your stock engine setup does exactly this: your crankcase breathes through your air intake, which can lead to oil passing back into the TB and intake manifold.

    so i'm guessing you plugged this line on your AEM intake and installed an auxiliary filter for crankcase breathing?

    if you ever want dealership work, you MUST put your stock parts back on. otherwise they're going to blame all your car's problems on your aftermarket parts.

    when you clean it you gota re-oil it and i am thinking about removing my intake. Also the car runs fine just won't go about 3000rpm's

    Go NEW Buy A K&n Filter. THE ONE WHERE THE TOP IS NOT CAP OFF. CUZ MAF SENSORS A SENSITIVE AND MEASURE AIR WHEN ITS NO SWIRLING. THE MORE SWIRLING THE AIR HAS THE SENSOR HAS A TOUGH TIME ON MEASURING THE AIR.
