    tranny of death

ok guys im fucked....i think heres my prob

my tranny is shifting weak as fuck its strugglin, when i floor it, instead if feeling the normal "jerk" of speed it stays exactly the same it just increases speed (hard to explain) and when i do floor it i hear a click of some sort, also my engine temperature is low as fuck when i start the car..am i doomed?

so... it doesn't downshift when you floor it? and i'm not sure what the engine temperature being low when you start the car would have to do with your tranny, but the first thing i'd check is the throttle cable. do you know which gear(s) it fails to shift to?

well ive driven a car when the auto tranny was about to give out. Are you saying that when you give it gas the engine RPM's increase but the tranny doesnt shift?, or hesitates to shift and when it does you can feel it slip or clunk? Thats what our Buick felt like when the tranny needed a rebuild.

oh and engine temp is always low when you start the car, it just has to warm up. now if the temp is staying low far into your drive you've got a problem. it should be right about in the middle when driving.

/\ i think 3rd or 2nd, not too sure since its auto, but now that i remember yes the throttle cable was out of place when i popped my hood, then i hand tightened it where it was supposed 2 be and the problem persisted, how do i solve this

i can feel it slipping i guess thats a way to describe it, its just as if shifts take way too long and the cars struggling to make them

It may be a long shot, but did you check the tranny fluid? We had an old Buick that wouldn't even drive..until we told someone he could have it. He poured some tranny fluid in and drove off. :p

Screw AAMCO, they charged me $3200 to have my tranny rebuilt.
They'll "check it" for you by driving it around the block and then tell you yeah, the problem is internal, and it'll cost you $700 bucks to take apart and diagnose. And at that point, you can choose to take it somewhere else or use that money credited toward your rebuild.

so unless you wanna get screwed out of $700 bucks you hafta let them rebuild it.

oh and those idiots didn't do it right the first time either, they had to replace my torque converter twice cuz it kept throwing a check engine light.

it's owned... do yourself a favor - take it to a transmission shop before you end up doing destruction to the casing... that will cost you. check on the price of a new tranny from 1sttoyotaparts.com as well - if they quote you well over that for a rebuild or replacement, just get that one from 1sttoyota.

might not have even been your fault. I was told my tranny went out because of a factory misseated snap ring. Toyota decided i'd be satisfied with a bunch of coupons for oil changes as reimbursement. Mine happened at 68k.

If you haven't had the fluid changed since you got it - change it out. I change mine at 30K intervals and have about 135K on it now. You can take it to a dealer or mechanic and have it flushed for ~$70 (might make it worse - depends on what is wrong with it) or get a pan gasket and plug gasket for ~ $20, 4 quarts of regular Dexron III ATF for no more than $20 and drain / drop the pan and check for metal shavings / clean off the filter screen / reinstall pan / refill. Take less than a hour to do and if it still messed up - new tranny time.

just got back form toyota...they said it was my "oversized" wheels and tires, which sounds iffy since ive had em for months, and my tranny fluid is dirty as hell apparently so maybe, just maybe fluid is the culpriite... i wonder if i can hold em liable if sumthin does happen to my tranny and they were wrong.... ill scan the invoice later on, im at school now

Sounds like more BS from the dealership blaming aftermarket components. They can't say that unless the wheels are truely "oversized" - much wider than Toyota specs, much heavier than specs, etc. If you just plus sized the wheels (185/65R14 >> 205/45R16 for example) - then you really didn't "oversize" the tires - maybe a little wider (20mm) and possibly heavier. But dark or burnt smelling ATF fluid is usually the culprit in 99% of the cases. Might have to get it flushed out or drained a few times to get all the old fluid out. I've ran Plus+2 wheel size after I broken in the engine and had no transmission problems over the past 3+ years of ownership except for the dealering filling it with the wrong type of fluid.
