I cant see the article, but I say yes they should be able to use them. If the use of force is warranted, then a Tazer is perfect for cops. It causes no permanent harm to the person, yet renders them pretty much unable to harm the officer. If my brother was on duty and struggling with someone I'd rather have him tazer the guy than possibly get punched, hit, stabbed etc. Oh and I'd rather get tazered than hit with an asp anyday.

You know, the real problem is not with the cops using "excessive force" but rather not enough force. Remember the phrase "stop, or i'll shoot!?" Well back in the day, they DID shoot, and the crime rate was A LOT lower than it is today. They also took people out back and beat the shit outta them, no court procedings, no appeals, no lawsuits, just a good old fashioned beating...and crime rate was lower. People also left their doors unlocked without fear of being burglarized or worse.

Stop protecting the criminal and just let cops do their job without fear of lawsuits or jail time. Our law enforcement system doesn't work, and everytime you have new, non-lethal ways to enforce laws, you just make it that much more appealing for someone to commit a criminal act. It's just like the death penalty, everyone says it's not a deterrent. Well no shit, they also never execute people. You can't say you're gonna do something and never do it, then expect society to buy into the non-sense.

Being that im in a family full of people in law enforcement I'd say our legal system works better than alot of people think. I'd say a 98% conviction rate prosecuting criminals over 25+ years is proof of that. Although there are definately shortcomings and people who fall through the cracks, but those are going to be present in any legal system. IF we wanted to completely forgo all personal rights and liberties in order to fight crime we'd probably be more effective, but in the U.S. we have to find a balance between the two.

I think it shouldn't be used man... you don't know how people's organisms react to electricity EVEN if it's in small or so called "harmless" amounts like the ones given by the tasers....

true, but you could kill someone with an asp on a rare occasion, hell you could yell at them and threaten to use force, they're scared, they keel over and die of a heart attack. that doesnt mean the cops should be nice, quiet and courteous when they feel threatened just because the guy might get scared and croak.

I agree with you there, but if they're allowed to use the Tazers, at least they'll have it if a situation arises that might merit its use. Cop could go years without using his gun, but if he needs it he sure as hell is glad he has it.

2 La Habra officers were shot the other day by some parole out of Inglewood... The cops are alright luckily.. The bastard was shot about 6 times in the chest with AR-15's after he was caught an hour later.

Tazers are useful.. in most southern calii agencies.. tazers are carried by Sgt units.. They'll take down the biggest, baddest son of a bitch out there with the press of a trigger..

After someone has been tazed.. they are checked out immediately by the fire dept to make sure they are alright..

Many times a tazer is used in place of actually shooting them....they are in a situation that allows them to use deadly force, but instead they use a tazer to subdue them and make them cry. :)

im taking some criminal justice classes and we talked about this stuff for a real long time ; and in my opinion tasers probably aren't the best thing to try to prevent someone from hurting themselves/others.. but then again what are the other options... a gun ? a night sticke or w/e it is they carry .. a gun is obviously an excessive form of force even in the case of the man hurting himself, and hitting someone with those clubs or w/e is putting the officer in danger because he has to get pretty close to the suspect or w/e he is. So i mean tasers are doing the job, although there have been rare cases of death =/ People have a problem with authority and they don't wanna listen and put other people in risk of getting hurt, s0o the police have to do SOMETHING ...

Someone was killed last week from being shot with a bean bag. Internal bleeding from the spleen area.

It was either that, or a gun. Just so happened he died.

Jesus, this reminds me of the time I tazed myself. Girlfriend got it for me for like 3 bucks in Chinatown.

I was sitting in my car pissed off because I thought I broke it. It normally had a stream spark of electricity running between two prongs. I thought I played with it too much, so I was dumb and decided to test it out on my jeans, put it to my leg and ZAAAAAP BUZZZZZZ.

I think the taser is a perfectly good weapon to use. It doesn't kill, it stuns an person long enough for an officer to make a safe arrest or take control of the situation. Lots of crooked cops out there, hiding in bushes and everything just to give one speeding ticket, but there are a number of good cops who are just out there risking their lives. This should be a present to the criminals.
