So, after many a crappy bulbs, I think it's time to take the next step to real HID conversion. I see they offer 5,000k-12,000k. Obviously I like the the 12,000k pictures I have seen, but this would probably be ridiculous and blinding in my tiny corolla. Who has done this mod? What is a decent color to use? I was thinking the 6500k would look ok. What about glare and reducing glare? I tried to dig up some past forums, but wasn't sucessful. Any brand preferences? It seems like hella is good, which it looks like McCullugh carries. This looks like a very simple mod as well, pretty much plug and play.

screw those plug in play hid kit, go custom and get some real HIDs and get some projector HIDs...i'm tellin u they r the best, i know every night i drive, i say damn i think this is def. 1 of the best things i have done to this car

Which HID's did you retrofit on your car? BMW,AUDI? Single or Bi? I'm thinking about doing this to my car eventually too.

talk to sean2sean about all this, the price is gonna run u roughly around $900 installed for everything. sean2sean did my retrofit (i was the first 98-00 retrofit...woo woo!), then a few months later he did sddynamix. but yes, the projectors r definately the way to go, cuz buying a plug in play for any car will cause major glare most of the time because r headlights r designed for that amount of light output.

So what year AUDI projectors do I need to be looking for to make this happen? And how well is the fit?

just buy a good quality retrofit HID kit, youll be happy with the results

How much is a retro fit going to cost? How much were your audi ones ruff? After I posted this I did some research, looks like just popping in a HID kit is a pretty bad idea. I'd definently need HID projectors to make it work. Am I correct with this assumption? sddynamix: what area of SD are you in?

i dont think its a good idea to use audi, bmw, nissan, ect. bc alot of those kits are stolen, i know ppl getting arrested at the grove for having stolen HID kits on their cars, its no wonder a pos civic or big ass 72 caddy dont come with those lights, anyways i say get a legit kit, legal and its plug and play, as far the 12000k vs 6000k, id go for 6000k, its bright enough and bet 6 n 8k there is not much difference

dragonhunter is very satisfied with his plug and play kit, which would roughly cost you about $300-400

only legal way? It's not legal The second you modify your stock housing the DOT cert is broken. Just cause you take DOT HID's out of one car and put them into the DOT housing of another car doesn't mean its DOT approved anymore Just FYI.

And to add to that, they need to have auto-leveling capabilities to be legal.

it wont take a genius to realize audi HIDs dont belong on a toyota, dont you think its a little suspicious, even if you did buy it legit... i think deadnick makes a good point anything you do modify on your car will not generally bc it no longer is like it was intended and approved for

I think we are all well aware of the fact that most everything we do here on this forum isn't exactly legal. The law prohibits ANY modification of your vehicle. That means even if you get 100% DOT/SAE approved PIAA bulbs, you are still breaking the law. The law is the actual modification, not the part itself. Basically it gives law enforcement free range to write a ticket for anything.

Weed: does dragonhunter have any photos? I looked at the glare sheild, that may be effective for this purpose, but probably not as good as a retro projector.

DOT approved means DOT approved no matter how u look at it...how u align the projectors is another issue, but saying just cuz u put them on another car doesnt make them DOT approved anymore is BS, they say DOT approved right on them, how u r saying is that it's like buying a CARB approved cat or muffler from GReddy, HKS, Magnaflow or whoever is legal and just cuz u put it on a certain car doesnt make it legal anymore...no, it is legal no matter what car u put it on, now what u do before it hits or after it hits the muffler is another issue, but the muffler/cat is still legal and CARB approved...point proven. the projectors werent taken from another car and put into another, u can buy them brand new as individual items just like u buy any other part, they are not audi specific, other cars use the same oem projectors on their stock cars, the size of them r just referred to as the size of the audi projectors cuz most people r familiar w/ audi and they're unique appearance. and i happened to be at a California Board of Inspections like a month ago and asked them about the retrofit i had done and they said it was legal to do as long as the projectors were dot certified and that u had the appropriate height on the beam FYI

not all cars that even come w/ hids have auto leveling capabilities, auto leveling wasnt always around and they r not gonna make the cars before auto leveling was invented go in and have it all replaced just for that.
