i'm 21.... so far i've done swaps on 2 cars of my own... one of which runs on a full stand alone ecu which i built by hand (the 4agze in my aw11)..... i've done pretty much everything except for rebuild a motor (never needed to yet), however i'm very good at tearing them apart.... i've also made fiberglass pieces by hand (including the hood on my ae92, which isn't done yet), can do anything suspension....

things i can't do (don't have the tools here:( mount & balance tires (though, i have done it on one set of wheels for the ae92....), alignment anything better than "by eye" and weld a muffler on.

currently i'm also about to help a fellow mr2 owner swap axles in his car.... i'm helping another mr2 owner wire in his silvertop 20V (he doesn't know what he's doing electrical wise)... along with always helping my friend with his 91 Isuzu Stylus (4xe1), helping every now and then with the motorswap in our buddies crx which has found home in our garage for the past month, and helping my other buddy who keeps changing his mind (went from a 463whp talon, to an ae92 gts, to wanting an aw11, to now having an ae86)

    hmm.

as long as i have the right tools and a location to work i'll do just about anything...and there's nothing you can't do without a little reading :)

in all seriousness, i think the only thing i CAN'T do yet is weld or paint...anything else i can and will do.

Pretty much nothing besides what I don't know how to do.

There are certain things that less experienced people should leave alone that involve safety, road-worthiness and maybe cost wise. Say you're putting in a high-stall torque converter. You need to make sure you have a pretty good idea of whats going on otherwise you will have an expensive problem with an un-drivable car.

Make sure you have an idea and comfort in something before you do it. Otherwise, its best left to professionals.

I paid for exhaust, inner tierod ends and clutch/flywheel installation.

Things may change when I have a second car and a garage..heh

I'm 23, Casey's 25...we both work on just about everything, and if we can do it, we know someone who can. Casey's pretty much the one man pit crew, so I havea lot of faith in him when it comes to cars, but as far as design work and things like that, that's where I come in. I can do interior work and the like, and get a pretty flat line with body work, and he handles mechanical and electrical, and friends of ours know how to do stereos and paint.

So pretty much with Casey and I, and three of our friends, we have a pretty professional shop on our hands.

it all depends on who i have with me who may know a bit better than i do. I've done mufflers (including the welding but im reaaallly bad at it haha so i dont do that on my own car), brakes, intakes, short-shifters, never done springs but im willing to try, fuel filters, alternators, starters, belts, etc... I of course love messin with electrical stuff - have installed stereos in most of my friends' cars. Underbody neons, etc... Basically anything that doesn't require advanced knowledge or a lot of specialized tools.

I will work on any part of a car. But on certain areas I will get assistance or have someone at least double check my work, especially when welding chassis items (a-arm mounts, 4-link mounts, engine&trans, etc). I am soon to be 33 and have worked at customizing shops and hot rod shops when I was in high school and a few years after. So far I have done two full car restorations, the first was a 65 mustang which was my wifes (back then girlfriend). Last year I finished a two and a half year project which was really in depth. It was a 1956 Ford Thunderbird. On it's first long trip (Myrtle Beach SC) just one month after finishing the car I was offered over twice what I had invested into it, and sold it then and there. Had to get a rental car to drive home.

I am now looking for my next project car, a 66 mustang fastback.

On a car you wont get fried or electricuted not enough amps. just alot of voltage through induction unless your work on 24volt cars and those hybrid cars.
ive gotten shock so many times it very uncomfortable when messing with the ignition system but thats it.

spark plug wires? i believe those are quite fuck-you-uppable....car's just gotta be running.

im 17 and i can do anything bolt on. wont mess with electrical (unless its like changing bulbs or some other no-brainer), paint, or welding. and nothing huge i.e. a supercharger.

Hahaha the car does have a semi dangerous electrical system. Most of it wont do much too ya but the first time you grab hold of a spart plug electrode and bump the key you'll be lucky to live. I once got hit by a coil off an old Grand Tourino and it put me on my ass and fucked up my heart rate for a while.

Hm... Depends on my knowledge in the specific area, and the necessary tools and space. For instance I wouldn't get into repairing internal engine parts like valves, cams, or piston rings.
I don't have the heated garage, all of the tools, or all of the knowledge. Like other people said, knowledge is power. I would do it when I had all the resources for doing it properly. Otherwise you're just asking for problems and a big headache.

For now I will replace seals, suspension parts, wear items, and do some electrical. Overall I will learn about anything I can and repair anything if I have the proper tools, etc.

Knowledge, tools, and time!

That would be the shoes, the drums are steel. Used drums could...
Most of the shoes did a while back. Now they are making asbestos free organic and metallic shoes. But there are some on the market that still contain asbestos...

statik is right, however most mechanics still wet down the drum brakes with a solution to clean and prevent asbestos from becoming air born.

yes i am sure he meant to say the shoes (pads).

the new shoes i installed were asbestos free. the old ones i don't believe were asbestos but i am not 100 percent sure. everything was cleaned and it was well ventilated.
