a showquality paint job by a professional shop usually costs approximately 4-5k or more. my friend's repaint on his RX7, which was simply repainting the stock color on the exterior, as well as on the doorjambs and around the inside of the hatch and sunroof, cost about $2k.

note - this was NOT showquality, and doesn't include inside the engine bay...so the original white paint inside the engine is rather dull.

Ninety Four - im not sure what body shop you go to but if you didnt know, House of Kolor paint is not cheap, $1000-1500 you better go to Maaco or something, and i did not pay 4k just for paint, its was for paint plus all the body work that had to be done (trunk, new hood, new fenders, etc), my total bill came out to around $4k, i believe the paint was around $2700 of it

If you paid $4,000 for just OK quality, then you better go ask for a refund. Unless you're 100% into showing your car (which in most Corollas I think is kinda a waste) it doesn't make sense to spend more than $1000-$1500 dollars to get it painted. If you're just tring to make your car look a little better, go for the $500-$700 paint jobs at a *reputable* paint shop. Most of the time that's all you're going to need.

When your car is worth $6500, a $4,000 paint job doesn't make much financial sense, but I guess that's not all that matters when it comes to someone's ride. This is just my opinion, but of course people are entitled to do as they please.

Mine cost $1200 but it was a guy who rents paint booths and does the body work in his garage, not a major shop. $600 of it was paint and its not high end paint so I don't see how you can do a job for under that. Not that happy with the job but the guy is going to fix the mistakes this next month for free. I think if you really want your car painted by a shop you better have 3 grand sitting around.

$2000 for a factory quality paint job, excluding the door jams and engine bay (but black and grey blend together nicely anyway). Physco child and I (well mostly him) had to do all the sanding and de-trimming though.

Phozenstone - $2700 sounds more reasonable for the paint job. I'm not criticizing you, just saying that I personally feel the money put into show quality paint isn't worth the end result alot of times.

It apparently depends on where you live. In Atlanta, a friend of mine got a $300 paint job on his Caddy that doesn't look bad. I wouldn't have chosen purple, but the paint job is fine for a daily driver. Other friends of mine have paid around $500-$700 at local repair shops and gotten good paint jobs as well.

what makes it factory quality paint job? the fact that it was painted by a dealer?? i dont think there is any difference between a shop painting the car and a dealer painting a car cuz the dealer is technically a shop too. but there WOULD be a difference if it came straight out from the factory because oem paint gets baked after applied but that is not done at dealership paint jobs i think.

Well I wouldn't say mine is a factory worthy paint job but its good for how much I paid and for how much the car is worth.

Factory paint jobs are in my opinion more durable than most aftermarket paint jobs. But once you really get down and look at them they are far from being perfect. You would really be suprised at the amount of orange peel in a factory paint job. Honeslty if you are going to pay 4k for a paint job you better be getting the works. Strip down to the bare metal, full coat of primer, sanding of the primer, then another coat of primer, sealer, base, clear, color sanding, and a good buff job. Since I personally know a painter I can get my car done for around a grand. If you seriously plan on getting your car painted, then I suggest you get in good with a painter ;) Trust me, it will pay off in the end.

Right, it doesn't mean painted by a dealers paint shop. I could take my toyota to a Chevy dealership paint shop if I wanted to, that doesn't mean it's going to be either a Chevy or Toyota factory finish.

Mostly that means that all items have been removed from the body (weather striping, emblems, lights, interior, doors, lids, hinges, etc) so the paint could be sprayed behind and under where these items go.

A lot of shops will just tape off windshields, lights, etc and paint up to those points leaving a paint line making it is a lot easier for the paint to start peeling or chiping from those lines.

A factory paint job is applied before any parts are yet bolted to the body. This is why when you see Foose get a car painted on Overhaulin the entire car is striped of everything including old paint. If you notice they even take out the window tracks and locking linkage from the doors.

You will also notice in most shows they paint the main body (quarter panels, roof , firewall) seperate from the doors, hood, trunk, fenders. etc. This is to ensure full coverage of primer and paint, just like what is done from the "factory".

uhm my body shop had done that too tho, so i dun see any difference in getting it painted by a shop and what not. Any good body shop that knows how to paint the right way should be doing all of that, These pics are from after my whole kit, hood, and trunks been put back together...
