    Bad rubbing from 205/40/R17's

my rear tires are rubbing real bad on whatever that metal brace is called underneath the springs in the rear. when the car is parked there is like 1/4" in between the tire and that piece and when i hit bumps they make contact. What im thinking is my springs in the back are shot because my rear sits about an inch lower than the front, at first i thought it was because of my speaker box but no way in hell does that thing cause that much sag. Now what my question is, what should i do to fix this problem, new springs or what? stiffer ones? any suggestions as im not in any way very knowledgable on suspension related issues. I dont want a drop or anything, i want stock ride height front and back.

It may be an optical illusion that the rear sits lower than the fronts, since the fenders are lower in the rear.

New struts and springs would help.

Metal brace under the spring? Do you mean the perch? Maybe your wheel's offset is incorrect.

I think I'm experiencing the same exact problem with my Kosei K1 16" wheels. I had to roll my fender to stop the rubbing on the outside of the wheel but the inside rubs on the perch. I might try a spacer out though. Or since my rear struts are shot I'll go with some really stiff coil over kit to replace the factory suspension.

Can you post a pic of the exact problem, just to make sure we're on the same page.

You can see how the tire has hit against that piece and bent it up, there is about 1/8 of an inch on the drivers side rear between that piece and my tire, the other side is the same distance but isn't hitting hardly at all other than on drastic bumps. You can see how much space i have in the front from the body of the car and the tire even though thats not related to my problem, but the rear you can see from the pic as well that it is very close to the tire. I went to a shop today to ask about spacers, he said a 1/16 or a 1/8 of an inch spacer would probably do the trick. but here are the pics.
and again, these are 205/40/R17 w/ +42mm offset.

I see x's, but if it's rubbing from the inner part of the wheel well then spacers should fix it. If its on the out part of the wheel wells like the fender then you'll have to roll them.

I've noticed that on corollas the rear is usually a little lower than the front, dont know why. Also when I put subs in my trunk with the spare tire, the back does lower a good 1/4 inch. Have you tried rolling your fenders? That's what solved the problem for me.

By the way nice car, I don't think I've looked at your cardomain page before.

yeh the corolla's suck, this seems bad but u can get a camber kit and adjust it so that u get a slight negative camber, i know a lot of civics do this to fit 18's and even 19's on it without scraping. some might consider it ricey but if u wanna avoid scraping, you can consider that.

well figured out what my problem was. i fucked around and ordered 17x7.5 inch rims and didn't realize that my last set was 17x7 inch. now i tried to get that 1/4" spacer in there and the only thing stopping me is not enough thread on the lug bolt. Im thinking i can go get lug bolts put on that are 1/4" longer so it can fit the spacer in there. Is this a bad idea?

hey i have 17x7.5 wheels on my car but i dun have much of a rubbing problem, u just need to roll the back good, and on the front i have the fender lips cut. Also i think it depends on wut tires u are using. I've seen Falkens 205/40/17 with 6.9" tread width but i've also seen Bridgestones same 205/40/17 with 7.9" tread width. So it really depends on the tread width even if you are using the same size tire.

My 16's(205/45/16 tire) rubbed on the strut when I bought them. I replaced the struts with KYB GR2's and havn't had a problem with that since. I do rub on the fenders though :p
