why would u want one of those?

i've ridden in a vw gti with that sporttronic shift thing and the shifts are rough. unless you got the money to buy a ferrari f1 type paddle shift transmission ur better off with a manual transmission. personally i think the automakers just put it in there for people, who don't know how to drive manual, so they can feel special.

    auto and manual shifting unit?

I'm not sure what it is called, but I have seen it in some cars. Basically, the driver can drive both automatic settings or manual settings. and there is no clutch.

sins, it isn't worth it at all. I'm not even sure if it can be done, but the way it works on the auto/manual systems is that you either have F1 paddle shifters on the steering column or you have it on your shift boot where you pull the boot to the side and pull back to upshift and push forward to downshift. You don't punch through gears like a stick, it's just up or down like those PS2 racing wheels.

Personally, I never liked them. Sure they can shift faster than any human alive, but you lose a certain feel to shifting with those, besides it limits some of your possibilities.

If you don't mind your tranny, you're just better off rolling through Low1 2 Underdriven3 Drive4. Not sure how much damage it really does, if any, but it's much better than wasting your cash on a system that will probably do the same thing besides staying in second instead of hitting first first.

What's your reason for not getting just a manual?

The DB9 has the paddle system hooked up to an automatic transmission and it's smooth stuff, so I hear, but it was designed that way. Corollas with a sequential shift... better off trading you car in for a manual.

yeah. i have an automatic...and i do that lame.. low 1 to drive 4 shift. lol. I only learned to drive manual recently when I had to drive a friend home using his car. it took me like 30mins to learn how to start the car. but i got the hang of it, and now my AT isn't fun any more. :(

I put so much work into my car that i'm not will to trade it in. and switching from AT to manual is very expensive. i guess...i'll live with it.

Hm, depending on how much work and what kinda work you've done, you can always follow one of the other board member's idea and find a friend what the same model as you and trade all your stuff over, take his old stock stuff, trade it in, then trade your stuff back and give him the newer stuff.

    Or something like that.

Yeah, the stick shift amazement happens to everybody who's stuck with automatics most of their life. But you'll get over it. Just think of your car as a cruiser.

It's still a bloody automatic by any other name, just with the ability to hold in a specific gear (ahem, like a Daewoo Leganza's HOLD button) Multitronic is a CVT... a little crowbar separation, please....

A few of the names of them... Sportronic (not sportstronic), Steptronic (BMW), Tiptronic (VAG, Porsche)... SportShift, SelectShift (Lincoln), E-Shift (Toyota), Touch Shift (M-B), AutoStick (ChryslerCorp)... Hurst ratcheting shifters and Lightning Rods (Hurst/Olds) are along the same idea.. for automatics that is.... Then there are true manuals... sequential ones... SMG (BMW), SMT (Toyota), Cambiocorsa (Maserati), F1 (Ferrari)... then there are the old, TRUE clutchless manuals (lever operated like a normal manual)... E-Stick (AMC, VW), Twin Stick (Mitsubishi), Sportomatic (Porsche).... and who can forget the names for just plain old automatics... HydraMatic, JetAway, DynaFlow, Cruise-O-Matic, Flashomatic, Fordomatic, Powerglide, TwinTurbine300, Hondamatic, Toyoglide...

Okay - so how exactly does manual shifting on an auto destroy it? I don't think it'll hurt anything if you're smart about it. Furthermore, it probably would extend transmission life if you knew what you were doing and not just fucking around.

When you manually shift from 1-2, how is that different than letting it do it on its own?

ask your local mechanic...i don't know the specifics of it(too early in the morning).

what i CAN tell you is i know quite a few idiots who do that sort of thing, and they've all had to replace their trans. some more than once because they didn't realize that manually shifting an auto is what caused it to die.
