Garrett T25 turbo and 01 Corolla

i'm pretty new to this turbocharging scene. Perhaps, someone here with more experience and help guide me.

So far, I'm bidding on a T25 turbocharger w/ wastegate and a intercooler as well. I found a place that does custom piping. So I have the basics covered kinda.

My concern is about whether or not I need to mod the fuel injection and O2 sensors or not. Also, do I need to look for an aftermarket manifold?

So you have your turbo, intercooler, and piping. You also need:

Turbo manifold... The stock manifold has a decent collector, you may be able to get someone to weld the turbo adapter right onto it and you'll be set.

Downpipe
Turbo Oil lines
BOV
Boost controller (optional)
Turbo timer (optional)
Piggyback computer, Greddy eManage is a good tool
a/f ratio gauge, boost guage, EGT guage

Then you'll need to tune the car. Basically, you want to widen the injector pulsewidths to get more fuel (if you're boosting a lot then you'll need bigger injectors, but you don't want to boost a lot unless you're rebuilding the engine with low compression pistons and forged rods), and you want to retard the timing under boost. Keep the a/f ratio around 12:1. Use 93 octane if available. Do not boost past 5-7 psi with stock internals, unless you don't mind having to rebuild your engine soon.

Do a search online for "engine tuning" and "ignition tuning" and read all you can. If you need help, email me at joshua@phoenixtuning.com

DSM or Nissan T25, get a aftermarket wastegate while you're at it. The internal one is set at 12ish

thanx.

But I didn't think ignition tuning was possible for my Corolla because it doesn't have a distributor and runs on the coil/ignition system.

Yeap it is, that's what you want the aftermarket computer for.

I was told stock injectors with an eManage will be good for 4.5psi, but you'll want bigger injectors for anything higher.

A wideband afr/o2 gauge would be nice, but they're pricey (about $400 for AEM UEGO).

yea, I have the t-25, you'll want to get the external wastegate b/c there isn't a wastegate that goes below the 8 psi limit that fits the t-25. As far as injectors go, people have had [good]luck with 2.2l camry injectors, so that is what I got. If you are like me, and want to do everything yourself with as little downtime as possible, you might want to pick up a spare oil pan. I got mine off of www.car-part.com for $55

Everyone seems to have good luck with the Emanage.. so get larger injectors and hook the emanage up to it and tune the injectors.

I got the greddy type s, I think that it has a nice sound to it.....I was going to go with the RFL but, I got a deal on the type s, so I jumped on it. If you want to go with just a air bypass valve, you can get a bosch one that was on the DSMs [I think] and they are like $35, but they don't make any noise.

wow. they should make you guys in a pocket-size verion.
Thanx to your help. So far this is what my list is composed of:

Greddy Turbo Timer
Greddy Emanage
2.2L Camry Injectors (1998?)

Debating what BOV to get. They rang from $80 - A LOT
Your recommendation and insight would be greatly appreciated.

Do the 2.2l camry injectors fit the 1zzfe without modification?

Having done a homemade turbocharger project myself, I know from experience that it is a large undertaking. Expect it to take at least one or two months just to get it all together, then a lifetime of minor adjustments, tuning issues.

You must think about and plan for these questions. Don't start once you've answered and planned for these.

How are you going to connect the turbo charger to the head? Custom Manifold? Where are you going to source the flange for the turbo? Are you going to get it professionally welded? Are you going to fabricate a new exhaust for the system? Are you going to replace the cat. with a bigger high flow version? Do you know how to weld an o2 bung to the piping? How are you going to route the downpipe? Is there enough clearance between the downpipe and the halfshaft under full suspension travel?

Are you going to use an external wastegate? How are you going to connect it to the manifold? Dump tube or route back to the exhuast? Do you know where the wastegate hose connects to?

What are you going to use as a filter? How are you going to connect the piping to the turbo? Do you have all the clearance issues resolved for the intercooler? Where are you going to route the piping?

How are you going to connect the BOV to the piping?

How do you plan on correct the crankcase ventilation system so that the pressure can be relieved? The PCV system is not designed to operate with boost.

Do you know where to source a regularly threaded primary O2 sensor that uses the same voltage patterns as the stock OEM O2 sensor? (OK I'll tell you: you need to get a secondary post-cat O2 sensor from a same year Corolla from the junkyard)

What spark plugs are you going to use?

How are you going to maintain proper air/fuel ratio?

How are you going to deal with the MAP sensor?

What guages are you going to use?

What fittings are you going to use for the oil lines?

Where are you going to tap into the coolant system for coolant lines?

And then a whole bunch of other things I can't think of right now because I'm tired. Good luck.
