Sealed has better response, sounds more crisp, and doesn't have any sharp peaks like ported does.

the ported box is more for SPL, and it doesnt seem as tight and punchy as the sealed box.

just out of curiousity for what would free air be used?... im going to try and take the port tube out of the box and seal up the hole and see if it sounds any better. I did notice that when I have the radio on that the sound does sound crappy.

Depends on what speakers/subs you are running. Some sound good in a sealed app - others perform much better in a ported or bandpass enclosure. Another thing to keep in mind is space - most sealed enclosures can be made smaller than their ported counterparts.

Some speaker designs are "free air" meaning they do not have to be mounting into an tuned enclosure - actually the OEM speakers in the rear deck are "free air" which use the trunk as the "box". They generally have a very flat response.

For sound quality - ex. tighly controlled bass - probably lean to a sealed box. For SPL competitions - ported and bandpass are more efficient (if they are tuned correctly). You also have to figure in the group-delay/transient response characteristics of your speaker and what sound you want. Sealed have the best best group-delay figures (why it sounds "punchy"), then ported, then bandpass. Unless someone tuned the box correctly - sealed is the most goof-proof design. That is why some boxes you buy commercially - sound better when you plug the ports.
