LoL, thats funny. I always leave my car in first gear when i park, and i use the e-brake. But first thing i do when i start it is put it in neutral. Then get situated. Some manual driver for just dropped the clutch without checking, hehe. Now that could happen to anyone and me, i admit iv done it before, but i still had e-brake up LoL.

    always check... :)

i drove my friend to a bodyshop to pick up his car. we're waiting for the shop to bring out his car... then a shop person drove out a ford contour first and parked out front. the owner was a young guy and he looked at the car and stuff. it was all good, he paid his bill and stuff and walked and was gonna leave. got in his car, started up and pop the clutch - BANG! :) the shop person who parked his car, left the car in gear instead of using the parking brake and the owner just assumed the car was in neutral and let go of the clutch! so as soon as the guy let go of the clutch, the car jumped and hit another car parked in front of him!
so now the owner is all pissed and went inside the office and screaming at the shop saying why did they leave the car in gear and that he never do that, blah, blah, blah. the shop guy said well... that's what you normally do when u park, leave it in gear and you're supposed to check if it's in neutral before you start.
so in the end, instead of driving home his car, the car went back in the shop again. hahaha.

this is interesting... some people leave it in gear while some dont. i don't leave my car in gear unless i park downhill or uphill. if the road is flat, i just use my parking brake. so what would u guys say is the proper practice - leave it in gear or no?

I usually park in gear, and always on an incline. My previous Celica has very loose parking brake shoes and it once rolled down my driveway, and I ended up chasing it down the driveway. Thats the problem with most modern cars that have rear disc brakes. Its simple I leave it in 1st if my car could roll back,, and put it in reverse if it can roll forward. Plus the ebrake.

that's happened to me before but luckily there were no cars in front of me. I never leave my car in gear when i park it. Only e-brake. My car was at Toyota gettin worked on and when i got in it to leave I started it up and let off the clutch like i always do and the car jumped forward and stalled. Techs looked at me like i was an idiot, but dammit i never leave it in gear! lol

I usually leave it in first w/ebrake, unless I'm sitting in my car for a while before I get out..then sometimes I forget and leave it in neutral.

I always leave it in neutral /w e-brake on. My remote start doesn't work unless it's in neutral. Most of the time it makes more sense to leave it in neutral. I went to pick up my car from Toyota, they left it in 1st, jumped and stalled. Why put it in first on a flat surface? Never had to park on a steep hill yet.

    Why not? :p

I usually drive into a parking spot in first gear, and leave it there when I shut the car off. It doesn't take any more effort..I can't say I've really thought about it, though :p

I always leave my car in first gear. I don't trust just my e-brake. If I am on a hill will the nose of my car pointing down I will leave it in reverse. You should always leave your car in gear, IMO.

Sounds like the guys hasn't been driving a stick for a while, or he has become accustomed to leaving it in neutral.

it depends on how i park, if i need to back out when i park, ill leave it in reverse. if i need to pull out, ill leave it in 1st. but regardless, the Ebrake is ALWAYS on when im parked. ill jump in the car, pop in the clutch, start it up, un-gear it and re-gear it and move. ive only poped the clutch once, and i was at a light, in 1st gear with the clutch in. there was a huge truck on the trigger, and he wasnt tripping it, so i got pissed through 5 cycles, i opened the door, put on the ebrake and let off the clutch on accident. luckily i had the brake on otherwise i woulda been more pissed off...

i think its just personal preference. leaving it in gear give you that extra security when ur parked, but then again, it could make u feel like an idoit if u start it up and let off the clutch :p

Yeah - I second the e-brake and in gear. Use one as a back-up for the other. What if (and it's a really remote possibility, I know) the parking brake cable broke.....bye-bye car. Or if you just slid it into gear, but accidently didn't get it all the way in - without the e-brake is bye-bye car again.

    Funny side-note:

I walked out to leave for school one morning and noticed my dad's 91 Ranger sitting kind of cock-eyed in the front yard idling. He'd accidently started it before work and didn't set the parking brake.....the top of the driveway is a very slight decline, but once you get past the actual parking spaces, it's a steep decline. It wasn't rolling fast enough to notice at first, obviously....let's just say it picked up some speed. Worst of all - it was the second time. First time it narrowly missed the driveway entrance into the road. Luckily it landed in the ditch just to the side and broke the rear bumper off. I used my 90 Camry 2.0L to pull it out. AND THAT was a HEAVY truck for my little Camry to pull out of a steep ditch and up a hill like that - his rear wheels weren't even touching the ground to start with. *GO my little CAMRY*

i dont know if you guys do this but when i turn my car on i shake the shift stick and if it's a little loose then i know its on Neutral.... i've sometimes let go of the clutch while on first, uphill and i haven't turned off the car.... i feel stupid .. but that had only happened twice to me and thats cuz i was in a hurry.

I use the gear and e-brake everytime I park. No matter if I'm on an incline or not. Dude was a retard. When I get in to go about my business, I ungear and regear it, then be on my way. It's a habit with me now. I do it, and don't know I'm doing it.

Hah... well, I've halfway thought about it. Reading this thread I might consider leaving it in 1st when I don't have to use my remote start! Time to re-program...

same here. this way makes the most sense. only leave in gear if on some sort of hill and at night so its more difficult to steal haha. but other than that just e-brake.
