Another Rolla Lost

Friday night in Mount Juliet, TN, a 98 Corolla was kicking a turbo Jetta's ass. Of coarse I won but there is bad news. During the race, something in my Intake malfunctioned and broke loose. I heard it but the car was running great like it always does so I got my stake money ($100) and went home to work on it. And to my luck, half way home, That broken piece came loose from whatever it was stuck on and went through my headers into the engine block. What it was, was a rock that had jump off my tires and penetrated a weak spot in the air filter. The VVTi motor was destroyed entirely. Now I can't decide what to do. So I'm going to ask for your opinion.
-Should I pay $4500 to rebuild the corolla and continue to upgrade it or should I buy a 96' Mitsubishi Eclipse RS for $3000 and build on top of that? Your opinions will be well appreciated.

Ummm... since you said Eclipse RS RS RS i have to say stick with the corolla. Now if it was a GSX eclipse, id say it, but not an RS.

umm...Sorry dude, I would not get an Eclipse RS. Tranny problems after 70k miles, plus they are slower than my 95 DX.

Just find a low mileage toyota engine in a junkyard, shouldn't cost more than a grand, and just swap everything onto it.

wait wait wait a minute. WHAT? so it went thru the air filter => header => then to the engine block? How does that make any sense?

did you mean to say it went thru the air filter into the intake manifold and then it managed its way into the engine block?

$4500 is WAY too much for repairs. Used motors are like $500, buy one of those and just swap it in :) or you can be like me and buy a 1990 honda CRX and have fun with that while you fix the superior car

True the corolla would be cost effective to repair.......But a built 4G63 has a bigger market for modification.

do a swap. plain and simple. eclipse's r really chick cars n e ways (no offense to anyone) and overdone. only eclipse worth it is a GSX (awd turbo.. now that gimme some ideas). and yea, i remember the tranny problems too. I have no sure suggestions for a swap though (i'ma 96 owner n my thoughts r doing but extremely), i've been out of the car game since last october.
p.s. - ummm, did u have a swap in it already? cause last i remember, the corolla didn't get the vvti until 2000. just my thoughts.

i agree, do an engine swap, maybe a blacktop or silvertop? if you think however that you'll be losing money, get a 95 celica...

I smell something fishy too. :D

intake -> headers (s? and header(s) between intake and engine??) -> 98 vvti engine (?)

Thanks. I really appreiciate it. Do you think that I might be able to fit a VVTLi 2zz in the rolla from one of the new Celicas?

answering your question about the vvti in a 98'. your right the vvti did come out later. I already had an engine swap with a 2004 corolla (Its back end was totalled but the engine was fine so I bought it). I have had the motor for about two months and now its destroyed.

its possible to beat a turbo jetta with a lightly modded rolla.. IF:
1: rolla is manual, jetta is auto
2: its an older turbo jetta
3: rolla driver is god
4: jetta driver sucks

he probably meant to say it went though the head, not the header...its all good, we were all there at one point or another. I remember asking someone once what the difference between a supercharger and a turbocharger was :) thats why we're here guys :)

I got the boost controller free from a buddy of mine. He was giving some stuff away and I thought it would be a good investment to get one free than pay.

I don't know how I beat him, but I did. And your probebly right, the guy in the Jetta didn't look to experianced, at least from my perspective.

Hey mantis thanks for the offer but I found another engine brand new. Yea it cost me 3000 but They are also installing a new Short Ram and installing my Comp Chip and boost controller for free. Your thing on switching the motor to a VVTLi was insane. Maybe in a couple years I might just do it but I just dont have the funds to do it now.
And off topic, I was looking at a Garrett T25 Turbo Kit, $2800, for the rolla. What do you think?

Dont ya think you should get the turbo BEFORE getting a boost controller!!!

And yeah, the stock TDIs put out 100hp....but a good amount of torque.
