You really should learn to drive w/o ABS to learn how to use ABS.

my first car had no ABS and I love not having ABS. I drove one car with it and it was just too weird.

Cause right before lockup the pedal pulses and thats just a weird feeling

Braking with ABS compared to breaking without ABS

I'm dumb... what are you supposed to do with and what are you supposed to do without?

ABS allows you to steer through the obstacles.....non ABS brakes just lock up, and youre at the mercy of whatever direction you were aimed at when you pressed the pedals.

ABS systems pulsate the pedal....which freaks a lot of people out, and they take their foot off the pedal when that happens, which negates the entire point of ABS brake systems. Thats why ABS gets a bad rap, because most people dont know the characteristics of the system.

yah , with non abs brakes, if you just lock them up, you'll loose your steering priveledges. u gotta keep tappin your brakes if youre recovering from a skid

*sniffle* I'm gonna miss my non ABS system on my 98 ... *sigh*

I knew how to drive the shit outta non-ABS lol

The 99 I bought to replace my 98 has ABS in it... bleh - I dunno tho ... at least the eBrake still locks up the back for me... took those POS national's (tires) that the dealership had on there out for a burn session last night... YEAH BABY! :)

wanna keep at least a pair intact tho for after I transplant the turbo from the 98 to 99 so I can just burn them right off the wheels... MUAHAHAHAHAHA ! (I WILL SHOOT VIDEO FOR YOU ALL!)

ABS is for mommy... real man drive w/o ABS like i do... lol...

for ABS u just slam on the brake and the computer will do there job to prevent lock up

w/o ABS u hav to pump brakes to prevent locking...

but some test hav shown that if a person hav skills... ABS stop longer distance compare to the person hav skills w/o ABS but i think those were the old system... the new system w/ EBD plus ABS does help the car to stop faster...

overall, abs is good but a lot of people think that with abs... they can speed and stop faster/better - NOT! same thing with people who drive 4x4, they think they can drive real fast when it's snowing or raining coz they got super traction - stupid people!

you shouldnt try to pulsate your pedal on a non abs vehicle, you absolutely CANNOT do it quick enough as compared to computer controlled abs. with non abs you need to be more aware of road conditions and speed and modulate brake pressure instead of mashing and praying. simple

I see why you guys all don't like it for driving for fun and stuff but during the winter I seriously think its saved me from a few curb checks and maybe hitting a car.

What a weird statement......have you even been in a situation where you have needed to brake hard enough for your abs to kick in?

It all depends on driving conditions at hand. In dry weather, good traction conditions - non ABS systems will generally stop shorter than an ABS system, since your braking distance is a function of overall traction (a locked up tire will yield the most traction).

But in wet/winter weather, poor/loose traction conditions - the ABS systems will generally out brake the non-ABS systems in a locked tire situation.

To minimize braking distances in mixed driving conditions:

non-ABS equipped car - brake hard enough not to lock them up. If they lock up - let off and get back on the brakes quickly (pumping the brakes).

ABS equipped car - brake hard enough to engage the ABS system, then back off the brakes slightly.

Problems that most people run into are not engaging the ABS (pedal pulsations cause people to let off the brakes) and locking up the tire(s) in a non-ABS equipped car (a bad thing in a FWD car).

this is completely true....... and don't "pump" non abs brake systems...... all you'll do is lose braking power when you release the brake.... you need to learn to modulate the force you put down on your foot.... and you also need to learn to know if/when the wheel locks up even for a split second so you can make an adjustment and release the locked wheels, but still be braking near lock up.....

    dx doesnt come in 1.6

I know abs is optional on 1993. Personally I like it, winter would fucking suck without it.

The fact is, under most circumstances, slamming the brakes on an ABS equipped car will give you shorter braking distances than an otherwise identical car without ABS.

Yeah, but the whole point of ABS is to slam on the brakes, and steer through it.

yup 93 here with NO ABS!!! haha i like it but it is not as safe... i have locked up the brakes quite a few times. no accidents... mostly for fun on my part. scares the shit out of my passengers lol.

i have flat spots on my POS kumho ecsta 711s now... i am looking to replace them with fresh yokohama es 100s

newer ABS systems=stop in a much shorter distance

when i went to driving school, they try to teach you without the ABS first to get a better feel for the timing and release of the braking process... but really i think its not that such big a deal. how many times do you brake hard enough to use ABS in normal daily driving? even with abs though you can still lock up the wheels if you brake hard enough, but that happens rarely.

sigh, my 97 doesn't have it, and it's a DX too. funny thing is that it has a relay in the main fuse box under the hood for ABS, it also has a control module under the dash by the glovebox and it has a light in the gauge cluster, but it never comes on. for a long time i thought i had abs but it didn't work, then i did some research and found out that i never had abs, because my brakes don't have the special sensors and my mastercylinder is too simple to provide the braking assistance for me. it would have saved me a bent rim going down a hill last winter

Maybe so, I'm sure if you buy the higher end Mercedes, BMW, etc. their ABS may improve braking on dry roads. As if those cars already don't stop fast enough...

However, the average ABS today is not made for performance, it's a safety feature. Generally people who buy it need it for their road conditions, and with no contest own a non-ABS car on ice. However, by denying the driver the opportunity to put his brakes just at the point of locking for maximum braking. An ABS car will sense that and immediately take control out of the driver's hands and pulsate automatically, but not quite the same a human would.

To manually pump your brakes, you firmly push in the brakes just until they lock and you hear them start to chirp. Then you let off pressure from the brake (but not all the way, like 20%-40% reduction) until the wheels aren't locking anymore, then you put more pressure in. On dry roads, a human can do this better. Why do you think Nascar, Indy, F1, etc. don't have ABS?
