    isnt your engine faced backwards compared to 1zz-fe. our intake manifold are in the front of the car. transmission is on the other side of the car. not to mention u gotta get the ECU too. not sure if that plugs right in to a 93 corolla

    non vvti-->vvti swap

    i was just reading over a few of these posts and people are talking about swapping out an older non-vvti 1ZZ for a vvti one. correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't vvt-i only involve the head? coudln't you just do a head swap and call it a day? not that it really matters to me (i got my kick ass 93:D), just curious.

    VVT-i is controlled by an oil pressure valve which is controlled by the ECU. That little "i" means intelligent, meaning the ECU constantly varies intake cam phasing. It's not just a mechanical control system - gotta have the "smarts" to run it. If you're talking about swapping a 1ZZ-FE head onto a 4A or 7A-FE engine....uh....forget about that. SXLOSTV1 is right - the 1ZZ is completely backwards from most other Toyota engines, including the A series. The only way you'd get VVT-i would be to do a complete engine swap - and even then, the plumbing is still backwards. 1ZZ is "in @ the front and out @ the back" and as far as I can see - that's a real booger of a problem.

    Pre 98 corollas have the advantage of a A series engine. You can always drop in a 4age and turbocharge it, theres a shitload of support for the 4age.
    You could also get a 3sgte in there if you have a tranny too. A 3sge would be an upgrade. An AE101 chassy has alot more options than does the 98+ corolla.

    Naw what 93rollaracer is asking is on the ZZ engines, the ones that don't have VVTI can't you just swap heads to make it work then just replacing the engines. but sxlost and corollaulev basically hit the answers

    Besides AsianPersuAsian, did you guys even read his post?

    He's not asking if he can get VVTi on his car, he's asking if a non VVTi 1ZZFE could have the head swapped from one that has VVTi.

    Interesting question, it seems like it should work as long as you fix the wiring and have the ECU.

    By chance I am mostly Polish or at least that's what they tell me, but the avatar is a phoenix and stands for my shop, Phoenix Tuning.

    Also, slvr2000fdvspec is correct, it's a 2ZZGE.

    you can do the swap, i was thinkin of doin it awhile back, but something else kinda came up........lol. but you would also have to look at your transmission as it will rev a little higher ( i currently have a 3sp auto, wont work with 4 sp auto w/od) and also you must get the ecu from a VVT-I.
