I have the Linksys wireless Router and wireless PCI Adapter. I installed the stuff on the new computer I got. However, when I try to set the WEP at 128-bit encrpytion, my router disappears from my wireless list and I cannot access the router/connect to the net. If I do get it to show, the signal is low and it will not allow me to connect to the internet. When I go to set the MAC filter, it won't even show me an IP address.

I can use the internet/router without setting the WEP. I disabled the SSID broadcast, I finally set the MAC filter (however it disappears once i set the WEP), and i changed the PW to the router.

Does anyone have an idea as to how I can set this???

I have Windows XP home SP2.

you would have access your router through a web browser.
enter 192.168.1.1 into your browser and a little pop up asking for user name and password, leave the user name blank and the password is admin.
it should come to the linksys setup page. click on the wireless tab, and then on the wireless security subtab.
you should be able to figure out the rest. just play around alittle.

mac filtering is sufficient, WEP isn't very secure anyway, and it introduces more latency (because every packet gets encrypted). If someone was sneaky enough to be wardriving/sniffing around your area, rest assured, they'd eventually crack your WEP, so don't even bother.

You can defeat mac filtering too, rather easily, but that's a whole other topic of discussion.

Whenever I setup routers, I just enable mac filtering, set a complex password on the router, and limit the number of IP addresses your DHCP server will hand out to the number of computers you expect to use your router on a regular basis.

Thanks for the info. BangRolla..Thats what i did to get to the settings, but once I change the WEP settings, it'll disconnect me from the router and not let me back in. Updated news on my part. I was able to set the MAC filter up without an issue. changed the passwords and what not. the router even showed up on my wireless list after I did the WEP. however, When I try to connect with the WEP it will say "limited or no connectivity". then i won't allow me to access the router by using the 192.168.1.1 or even the internet. *sighs* This is pissing me off..lmao. When i get home, i'm going to continue to play with it. if all else fails, I will just leave it w/o the WEP.

You need to have at least one computer hard wired to router when changing settings such as WEP and MAC filtering. If you turned off WEP on the router, make sure you turned it off on the wireless computer as well.

Personally, I run MAC filtering, WEP, change my network ID, and I don't broadcast my SSID.
