question: 6 speed conversion

Hey, im wondering if its possible to put the 6 speed from the celica gts into a 2001 5 speed rolla without any major issues..

i know at least that i wont have any ecu issues like someone trying to go from auto to manual, but will the 6 speed fit onto the 1zz?

the reason i ask- my 3rd gear is starting to grind a little.. but only on the 4-3 downshift at speed, other than that the tranny works like new.. however, if i have to replace the tranny, id like to stick to my modding philosophy, and always replace a part with something better..

it could be done... but not w/o major issues. :)

be prepared for some grinding, cutting, possibly welding lol *shrug* just speculation on my part however as I have no clue what would go into a project like that. Might be worth looking into though. :)

U say u want to replace it with something better but dropping in a 6speed tranny is not going to be better. U're car will probably run slower with the 6 speed tranny because the gearing was not made for the 1zz-fe.

what XS PSI said is correct... you could always get a 6 speed though and change the gearing :p

well, the gearing on the stock 5 speed is pretty bad too..both 5th and 4th are way overgeared..so the 6 speed couldnt possibly be worse

now this is the information i was looking for.. i had come to the same conclusion btw..

however, will putting in an LSD solve my 3rd gear grinding problem? i dont see how unless the diff and tranny are one common unit in our cars.. which is possible i suppose..

thanks for this as well.. however, wouldnt it be more labor to rebuild the stock tranny than to just swap in a new one? i do like the idea of keeping the stock tranny and just putting in celica gt gears.. that would solve any and all of the fitment issues of a swap, but rebuilding a tranny isnt something i can handle myself, so id have to pay a shop.. a simple swap though, if it bolts up shouldnt be much of a problem to do.. besides it would be cool/unique to have an extra gear and it would most likely end up costing considerably less

No -- sounds like your synchros are going..

You may be able to pick up a junkyard Geo Prism tranny for a couple of hundred bucks, though..

you're wrong, and overgeared/ underpowered are one and the same..

the tranny isnt suitable for the power the car has, or the power the car has isnt suitable for the tranny.. same problem either way.. its easier to rebuild or replace the tranny than to make a more powerful motor..especially since the stock tranny has problems now anyway and it will cost roughly the same to replace it with either the stock or 6 speed.. not like ill be buying a new one either way

Yea it would be cheaper (in labor) "if" there were bolt-on easy swaps but there not. here are the instructions on how to swap the 1zz-fe 5speed tranny in the MR-S to the 6speed GT-S tranny.
Is it that 4th & 5th are way overgeared or your car is way under powered. And no the celica gts tranny wont fit.

I asked about this at Celica.net a while back -- apparently it is possible to swap the 6sp into the Celica GT, and the Corolla/Celica GT have the same transmission (IIRC), so theoretically, it should work. However, I have heard that you'll have to grind part of the transmission case for it to fit.

They said I'd be better off spending the extra money on an LSD over a tranny swap..

Is it possible? If someone can get a 3sgte into a Corolla, I'm sure a GTS transmission can be done..is it worth it? That's another question.

The reason why you feel 4th and 5th are "overgeared" or too tall is that the corolla is not making enough power to compensate for the tall gearing. If u are going forced induction the gearing will be a benifit. If u're gonna go NA I would just change the final drive to a celica GT or even a GT-S final drive. This will make all u're gears shorter.

Specs of all 3 trannies:

Corolla

Gear ratios
1st 3.166
2nd 1.904
3rd 1.310
4th 0.885
5th 0.725
Reverse 3.250
Differential Ratio 3.941

Celica GT

Gear ratios
1st 3.166
2nd 1.904
3rd 1.392
4th 1.031
5th 0.815
Reverse 3.250
Differential Ratio 4.312

Celica GT-S

Gear ratios
1st 3.166
2nd 2.050
3rd 1.481
4th 1.166
5th 0.916
6th 0.725
reverse 3.250
differential ratio 4.529

I think the Corolla tranny is cable opperated and the cellica is linkage. So the swap would require some crazy shit to make it work right. But i'm not expert :)

i think the gear ratio is gonna be too short for 1ZZ-FE and u'll be shifting ur ass off... since it's already short for 2ZZ-GE...
