My buddy's looking for a new car and wants an acura rsx (I don't think Type-S), but hasn't ruled out a corolla or a matrix or a civic, so what would you guys get?

Had i had the chance to buy a new car again? Id prolly stick with my 05 Corolla 'S'. Considering how i drive, i get 30 mpg city and i havent had trouble with it at all (only 4k miles on it tho). I like my car alot.

why only the type-s? I don't think he's looking for performance or anything, are there other reasons?

and do you have to put premium in an XRS?

first off, i really thought we had finally progressed past ignorant comments like this. I've actually heard very few bad things about the srt4 and they actually had one handle over 500hp on the stock block/internals before it blew... only 4 cyl i know that can say that. Comments like this are JUST AS STUPID as the ones that say any fwd small displacement car (mostly imports) can't be fast. It's ignorant. Please refrain from making ignorant wide-spread non-fact-backed comments.<br />

agreed. gas mileage and performance generally are opposites. the volta seems to be the exception, but I'm sure it will be quite expensive, and upgradability is going to be quite limited by its hybrid drivetrain. still cool nonetheless

cuz apparently she wants to go really damn fast for $20k. stupid girl

though i do agree with the tC as the choice for good looks, reliability and gas mileage for under $20k. Performance isn't too shabby on that either. tC or XRS - though I think you have to put premium in the xrs (all 2zz-ge's right?)

SRT-4 is fast but u'll see more of it in the garage than on the road after awhile after all its a domestic and things tend to go wrong w/ domestics... heheh

but imo u can't hav both performance and save gas at the same... heheh unless u hav the money to buy a Toyota Volta lol... performance of a sports car w/ gas mileage of a corolla

Corolla XRS would be my first suggestion. It does require premium fuel, but it gives astonishingly good gas mileage for a high revving, high performance engine. I calculated my average gas mileage and I am in the 29-30 mpg range.

I would look for a used WRX, but that's just me. Their exhaust note is insane!

If you're strictly looking new, then I would say the base RSX, a fully loaded Civic or a Scion tC (going most expensive to least) would all be good choices in $17,000-$21,000 range.

Not Quite sure how much a Mini Cooper is, but it's not much more than 20,000, is pretty quick and handles like it's on rails. When you throw in the fact that it's backed by BMW's build quality and dealer customer service, you really can't go wrong....

The XRS requires premium, but I've been using regular 87 octane gas and no problems with pinging. I'm still breaking it in and drive it like a grandma; the roads are flat. I do fill it up whenever I go near S.F. with premium 91, where roads are more hilly.

My wife and I are looking for the exact same things for her next car, but with two added things. We have one child and a dog we take places a lot. So we are going to a get a Matrix XR. She currently has a 99 camry LE. She dislikes the unsportiness of the camry.

If I were looking for one that fit the criteria, it would either be a used wrx, or a Mini Cooper S. Either one would be great for autocrossing.
