need quick help on bleeding brakes

ok, today i'm going to bleed my brake lines. i'm wondering if it is totally necessary to connect a hose to the bleeder valve and put it in a jar of brake fluid. i guess this is a good indication of when your air is all out of the system. i don't have the hose and i was wondering if i could have a friend press the brake and i would open the valve and let it spray out for a little while. any problem with that? also, how long should i open the valve for? i guess i would have to close it before the pedal goes to the floor because otherwise it would run out of pressure and fluid. let me know, quick, thanks!

ok first there is a kit to bleed the brakes that u could buy but you could also use a hose 3/8(I think I do not remember) and then just connect it to the brake and a container full of brake fluid(the most recommended way). now if you want to opening and closing the valve with out a hose, its to risky, it is not the safeties way to go either, but if you still want to do it by opening and closing the brake valve then it has to be done like this; tell your friend to start pressing on the pedal repeatedly and the almost simultaneously open and close it. Now do not repeat this more than twice on each brake. Do it for all four brakes and also remember to place more brake fluid on the car after done. And then road test (stability most be perfect or else there is air some where and have to do it again).

    A little advice
for me brakes is a big issue so I would spend as much money as needed for my safety.

i'm going to try and bleed them again today. however, i still get pressure, but it doesn't start stopping the car till i get the pedal half way to the floor. the pedal feels fine, it doesn't feel loose or anything. someone told me that if bleeding your brakes doesn't fix it. then it might be the master cylinder. i hope not, but thanks!
