I think as a group, we need to be more focused on performance.

Take this how you will, but I don't think the people on this board and corolla enthusiasts in general put enough emphasis on performance. When I look at boards like www.clubsi.com and others dedicated to Hondas, I see alot more work put into cars. Also, it seems people over there are more focused on making their cars faster, instead of just making them look/sound good.

I come from the school of thought that body kits are out for the most part. Unless something is very subtle and tasteful, like a lip kit, I'm more than likely not going to like it. Does anyone else agree? Hopefully as a board and as a community we can move in a more serious direction with our cars. I guess this anger comes from the fact that if manufacturers think you want ricey bodykits and l.e.d. wiper nozzels, that's all you'll get.

I do agree with you man BUT have this in mind......

    1. Honda parts are not that expensive man.
    2. Honda cars are the easiest cars to work with
    3. They don't have to custom make everything for their vehicles because of the variety of parts. (Unless they're trying to make a car that's not streetlegal or if they have loads of money to waste for custom parts)

Corollas are considered family cars and not imports that u can deck out dood, if u see the variety of parts for our cars and Hondas dood Honda has us beat by like 150+ miles man it's crazy, the Corolla community is startin to grow slowly but maybe someday when we grow enough the manufacturers will see the potential that we have till then we won't have the same variety of parts such as what manufacturers offer Hondas..... I dk but that's just my point of view

I agree with you that Hondas have much better aftermarket support, but they got that way because people were willing to invest in their cars. I think we've gotten too complacent with the current offering of parts. We've been lobbying for things, and sometimes we get them, like with EL Prototypes and Stafford Fabrications, but those small tuners don't always come through. I guess the bottom line it we have to be willing to back up our desires with our wallets, which can be very hard at times.

I've always thought the reason hondas originally were more popular to modify was because you can easily swap bunches of engines into them easily (rice came later). What do we got? 4age? Okay good choice but its a lot of work and money to swap in a engine that actually has less displacement then what I already have. I also think having a 2 door civic makes those cars much more popular than a corolla just because its considered more sporty.

I agree it would be nice to have more performance parts but as I'm looking for a new car right now, I realize its much easier and cheaper to just buy a fast car to start with.

and sadly, people are turning away from toyota more than ever because the fast cars are discontinued and the whole idea of competing with rx8's, s2k's and such is lost. maybe one day they'll wake up and realize being Buick isn't cool. If I had the money.. I would make crazy modifications to my car.

i agree with ninety four BUT clubsi.com is a very Very trendy website. One person that everyone knows will diss one car, and 456 users will follow suit with their own personal flame. Any car on there with Any sort of visual modification and no speed to back it up gets slammed, and overall the new users have rough intro if they comment and stick up for themselves when they are flamed about even having 17" wheels that arent ssr's (unless their car is stock, then its nice). so, I don't know, i like friendly comments better than flaming, and i think it would be nice to have more performance available. but 2 door vs. 4 door is a very valid point.

i know the "sleeper" or "jdm" look is in nowadays, but unless youre boosted or swapped (which isnt an easy thing to accomplish) whats the point of a sleeper corolla?
first of all im not really fond of the stock 98-00 corollas aesthetics (as opposed to say a 95 accord which you can just drop and will look pretty damn sexy), as for performance you really cant expect much when youre only option for a freakin cold air intake is an obscure little company and ebay... ofcourse the people on clubSI are gonna have more ridiculous things, EVERYTHINGS pretty much been done to their cars in the past so JUST going turbo or JUST swapping isnt enough they gotta come up with ridiculous amounts of power in order to stand out as opposed to us which drool at the one person with a 2zz...

civic is a economy car. no matter what model (si) and the corolla is a economy car no matter what model(xrs) so its just that the civic guys are more commited to getting parts made(and BUY them) than the corolla guys.

either way its a challenge if you have a civic you gotta do ridiculous ammounts of things to make it better than the next guys, and if u got a corolla 200hp will leave folks in awe but its alot freakin harder to do..

but as for the future im with superfly and gettin sumthin thats good/fast enough from the factory that id be able to have a formidable car without doing too many ridiculous mods

do your research and you'll find you have WAY more options than that..... my mr2 cost me less than $2,000 (has a variant of an A series engine) and i can keep up with a C5 vette (it was probably a lower model... but still... isn't tuned, had a boost leak at the time, and had a limiter at only 6,000rpm's)

that being said.... my corolla, ae92, that has a smallport 4age swapped in that's running on a modified 4afe ecu (ie, a simple swap... stock tranny, stock axles, stock wiring, stock fuel pump, stock ignition.... just pretty much swapped the longblock, changed a couple wires around, and added an exhaust) and i have yet to have another corolla keep up (i'm sure a 1zz-ffze wouldn't have a problem in a straight line at least though).... and i haven't even started with actually modding the 4age yet (have 20V itb's sitting in the garage.... an oil cooler awaiting installation.... planning to shave the head, and throw in bigport cams..... should see another 15+whp at the cost of under $500)

you guys just need to realize that the age range of corolla owners is probably younger than many of the honda guys.... however, the information is out there for those that want it..... i've learned a ton in only a year (smallport 4age swap was finished just a little over a year ago now), and i obviously learned everything i know from someone.... so the info is available.... it's just the questions you need to ask

guys u have to understand that in todays fast paced world people especially tuners are always looking for someting better. True if we all got together and pushed for aftermarket support then maybe we can get sumthing going but thats a far fetch with the corolla. would it matter if u really did have a 9th gen 200hp corolla? besides having one of the "fastest" corolla ur car would never match up to anything serious. unless ur willing to drop a gripload and i do mean a gripload of money y would u do that when u could have something that already comes with power i.e STI or Evo edition cars? i rarely have power in mind when i mod my corolla is it rearlly worth so much hundreds of dollars to pull out only a little HP out of the corolla? think cosmetic upgrades and make it look nice. look at people with the XB thing is super slow but speed dont matter with those . all that matters is the looks and those xb's look awesome fixed up. even if u were to go turbocharged with a 9th gen corolla would it even keep up with a stock STI? i drive by and people tell me i have a nice car thats what im there for im not here to pull out as much HP as i can with my corolla. now toyota has definitely made mistakes in the past biggest one is pullng the plug on the production of the now widely famous supra. also now toyota has decided to pull the plug on the celica. there giving SCION a chance but wat does scion have the TC? even if toyota were to bring back the celica or the widely rumored supra they wouldnt be the same. it be a form of the once famous supra. sorry i made this so long i just think thats the way it is

Yeah, I focused more towards performance, and bought another car.

For the amount of money youd have to put into a corolla to make it even KINDA fast is ridiculous when compared to just buying another car that has a good base to start with.

I loved my corolla, but didnt think it was practical to put thousands of dollars into a car thats only worth a couple thousand.

I think thats great that you were able to do a 4age swap for under 2 grand toyotaspeed90, but for example I helped my friend pull a b18 from a junked integra, paid $300 for it and its now in his crx. The project was under a grand and runs great. I don't mean to start a arguement over how cheap things can be done but it just seems to me hondas are much easier to work with.

Im pretty much fully focused on Performance. I have quite a bit of money invested under my hood and have put off a few "visual mods" to get there, though im very happy with the current look of my ride.

I think a marketing concept applies to this, and it is "it is not who makes the best product, but who gets there first that wins"

So when the import tuner scene came into play Honda was there first with support and thus got into the consumer's mind first. Everyone else just follows cath up. Sadly today every market is about who gets there first, and not necessarily who has the best.

clubsi is a different type of site, but you can find many other similar sites where many people have swapped engines in hondas till everyone is running the same swap, and throwing out the same numbers. Anyone with a couple of G's can do a honda swap, and still have the same numbers.

Having worked on both cars I can tell you that it is easier to work on Hondas than Toyotas, and the parts are so much more readily available. In my opinion I like the ergonomics and build quality of Toyotas better than Honda, but you get more accomplished modifying a Honda than a Toyota in the same amount of time. But side to side a Civic screams cheap, where a corolla is more refined.

In that respect I think vvt-i.net has its own merits, and not all the flamers that other sites have.

    Just my 2 c's

I think that sums it up perfectly.

I don't think that most people who bought this car were looking for serious performance...and the mods they do will reflect that.

the 4age swap into my corolla was around $1,000.... including a new high flow cat, full ehxuast, header and some other stuff at the time (including a sard fuel pressure regulator, msd 6al, blaster 2 coil, tach adapter, new plugs, wires, cap, couple new sensors, new timing belt, new serpentine belt, oil cooler which still has yet to be installed..... and all fluids)

the mr2 was what was under $2,000... that's including the price of the car, the 4AGZE engine, e51 transmission & axles, trd clutch & pressure plate, fully stand alone megasquirt & edis ecu setup, new clutch master cylinder, new kyb strut inserts with eibach springs, battery relocated to the front (mr2) and got a new gel cell battery, supercharged mr2 fuel pump (not installed yet).... the new exhaust i won't include because it was a little above & beyond the $2k mark.....

a b18 crx (even with a fuel setup like mine) wouldn't stand much of a chance against my mr2 at this time unless it has some serious work done to it.....

& to you guys who are talking about "corolla's not being performance cars".... you all have completely forgotten the fact that there are TONS of old drag corolla's that are sub 10 second cars......

okay I'm guessing people don't get the point man...... this whole thread started being because we don't focus on performance and all that I get that point but now ppl bring up dragsters cause I said "Corollas are considered family vehicles" come on now people use ur damn head lol.... okay I said that considering the fact that ONLY WE see the cars with potential, THE REST OF THE WORLD sees it as a simple non moddin car I mean seriously give me a break with the dragster stuff man lol...... and I'll say this again, as soon as we blow up huge man THEN ppl will start lookin at Corollas more than a family car TILL THEN IT WON'T HAPPEN! lol damn man lol

That's why I am saving up to cross into subaru. Not to knock Toyota, hell they've been my first 3 vehicles. :) But I realize that $3000 for a "supercharger" is not worth it to me when it tests yielding 36 hp. (perhaps it can get a little more but still)

Its not all about feeling pressured to compete with the STis and EVOs however, because they are not the best at everything. I just LOVE Subaru engineering and want a WRX, but I am wise enough to see the limitations. [after coming down from the biased high] STi and EVO cars are awesome, believe me I've driven the evo and the wrx, but they have a low end top speed. They're made for rally. Get the right american muscle and they're hosed, plain and simple. (Of course it would have to be a Camero SS or Cobra or maybe a gto with 400hp but that's beside the point lol)I am not down-paying these cars out of lack of knowledge of their performance. Hell I am around Subarus every day. Two of my best friends have modded WRXs and cruise with two EVO owners. :) I definetly respect the power.

If you love your Corolla for what it is; a reliable family car that gets really really good gas milage what with the gas prices going up (hint hint) then be proud of it and do not let yourself feel 'shortchanged' that you don't have evo performance. :) While all the hot rod guys are gettin gas, you can drive by them and honk your horn. :D

    Its all whatever...

first off.... i said "older".... in terms of pre AE chasis...... (te, ke, etc...).... they ARE still corolla's after all

secondly..... i've always said my corolla was slow as dirt in the straights..... even with the 4age..... that being said, it has outhandled many many many cars

who cares what others think of your car...... if that's your main purpose then really, performance isn't what you care about.... it's others opinions on your car (ie, style/looks)....

It is also no fair to compare a turbo Corolla to a STi or Evo since the STi or Evo is still a very expensive machine, you could have 2 nicely done turbo corolla's for the price of an STi or Evo... second of all, I think some of us here do what we can with the parts and options available... I don't have much done to my car, but it is lowered now with Tein springs and Tokico struts (and I also had to replace alot of worn out suspension parts that doubled the price of lowering the car, but thats besides the point), and right now I am saving up for a 4AGE Smallport and 5 speed swap for my car... it still won't be fast by any stretch, but the 4AGE will be a good platform for building a NA car (aiming for about 150~160hp, sans FI), which will be fast enough to embarass 99% of the honda's around here (except for the 600+ hp drag civic a local shop is building, their last dyno gave 593 wheel hp... ouch,a nd a few other exceptions)...

I bet if you give me the price difference from a corolla and a sti, i could make the corolla outperform the sti, and don't reply back with that "but the sti is stock" bullshit, it can happen, but with lots o money.

Yeah, its not always about what is faster stock... theres also bang for your buck... and im sure some of us could build a Corolla that could keep up or beat a STi in a drag, on a road circuit (probably not rally though, lol)... but for rally, get a 90-93 Celica all-trac for about 7500$ US (about 10 grand in Canada right now for one in good shape), rebuild the engine for more boost, get about 400~450hp... all wheel drive... mmmmm...

Yeah, you could put in thousands into a corolla and maybe make it able to compete with a STi, but that STi owner can take the same amount and make their car that much faster. (And it would be easier to upgrade as well)

Its just not practical to put thousands in a car that is essentially less than the mods installed. The newer corollas stand a chance though.

Yeah, say you have a corolla, put 20 grand into it and it beats an Sti, and then the STi owner puts 20 grand in his, sure his will be faster, but... 20 grand plus 17 grand corolla... 37 grand... 20 grand plus 49 grand Sti... 69 grand... see the point? those are canadian prices... local Subaru dealer is selling the STi for 49 grand...
