Engine mods?, need more power !

    Hey everyone
i know what i'm about to ask has probably been asked 100 times, well, i missed them so here goes the 101th.

How hard would it be to convert a non VVT-I 1ZZ-FE to a VVT-I, what parts need changing/adding and is it worth the benifit on a long term (more mods later on)?

What else can i do thats not too extreme (extreme being expensive shit $1000+ engine mods) to make more power? What do you recommend?
No, i will not swap to 2ZZ-GE, i test drove the 05 rolla XRS and was disapointed.

    Thanks

um idiot, the 98-04 corolla engines are the SAME except 98-99 doesn't have vvti, and 00-04 does, the difference is the location, which makes the supercharger unable to fit, he can just get a supercharger right now and custom fit that fucker in there..

Well, I'm no expert, but you can gain some additional horsepower out of a cold air intake and a performance muffler. You can spend up to $160 bucks each for big name brands and $40 ea for APC or BOMBZ brands. I don't really see a reason for me to spend $160 for a cold air intake when I can spend $40 on one that will do the same thing. As long as it works, and fits into your engine compartment good. As for the muffler, well, I just don't know. I don't know a whole lot about engine mods, but hopefully you get something out of this... if anyone else has something to add or correct, feel free...

basic mods to help performance: CAI, header, and exhaust system (bigger piping and fast, straight through design), even with these- you won't feel a significant difference, but itll def help you out if your lookin to crank out as much horsepower as you can from the motor...

but you can barely find headers for like 90's model corollas. theyre either made for the pre 90's or post 2000's

if you want to swap engine, buy a 03+ 1.8 VVTI fromt he corolla/matrix, get the TRD supercharger,a nd a hood bulge to have room for the supercharger :p
In all honesty though, the best option for you, if you have the cash, is doa complete tune-up ony our car (filter, fluids, get everything inspected) and then slap on a turbo kit... you'll get good gains in power, you'll be able to keep up to alot of faster cars :)

i also thought the 03-04 have direct injection which gives them that extra 5 horses on us 01-02s. But yea other than that its all the same. The only problem is if you buy a TRD supercharger, unless you're cool witht he dealership mechanincs, they probbaly wont install it on a non 03+ Car so you gotta get it installed elsewhere where they not as familiar with it.

Sounds to me like you did the right thing. By all means keep asking questions and learning. Try ToyotaNation.com and corollacustomz.com too, you can get some good info there as well.

    Thanks :D
As far as i understand these are the "easy" mods to do to a 1zz-fe

    Intake (CAI or SRI)
    Header, Catback exhaust, Mufler
    Throttle body polishing
    Reground kit

For faster shifting, short shifter with a fancy knob

    VVT-I - not worth adding

Turbo kits-intercooler, supercharger, NOS, electronic controlers, high-end expensive stuff that will blow a hole in your block (if not tuned right) and you wallet

And i figure for those who want to go further, screw around with the internals, crank, pistons, somehow put in sleeves to hanlde a retarded amount of boost, cam shaft, change flywheel, clutch and i dunno what else.
    Anything else anyone?

Is sparkplug wires worth it? any other tweeks?
