    sportronic vs manual?

Hey, I'm just wondering whats the main differences between the two besides the fact that it doesn't have a clutch.

    thanks

i'm assuming u're talking about like a sportshift, or a tiptronic, and not an SMG.

a tiptronic is still an automatic. u can't always choose your gear, if it's too low, or too high, it won't let u shift into it. Also, it's still slow as balls, and has a million moving parts, cuz it's an automatic tranny, just that it lets u have a little bit of input.

im not sure what its called but its in my uncles bimmer, you can change it to "manual" mode and you just press up and down for the gears and theres no clutch. It seems to me that he can choose which gear he wants at ne time though.

It is called steptronic. My bro in law has 330i and he thinks that steptronic is as fast as manual. I had to patiently explain to him that there is no way on earth that an automatic could be as fast as a manual car just yet.

umm isn't the new m5 like 100k bucks. no one on this board will ever own one of those. and besides m5's are so rare anyone. and most people would want a manual version with that much power.

yes, original SMG (SMG I) was 82 milliseconds or so, might be 87. the new SMG II that's in teh M5 is under 50.

but SMG isn't an automatic, it's a sequential manual, jsut like the name says, so that is as fast as a manual. automatics meanwhile such as steptronic still hafta go thru the ECU, and thru an automatic transmission, so tehy're significantly slower.

The M3 SMG shifting is faster then the Ferrari's paddle shifting... Think it's something like 80milliseconds in the m3 compared to 130milliseconds in the farrari...
