It is a normal thing to hear that whinning high pitched shrill sound when you have a cold air intake on. I am surprsied why you did not hear it earlier when you installed it. It is even louder if you have a supercharger. My 04 Corolla S gives a high pitched whistling sound (without a CAI) everytime I rev above 3500 rpm, but it is not loud. Only comes from the passenger side. Although, the Corolla XRS I drove had a fairly loud whistling symphonic kind of a sound every time it hit lift at 6000 rpm. I heard it even in an Acura TSX I drove, 03 Honda Accord 4 cylinder etc. so you can see from all the examples above
that it is a very common thing for 4 cylinder cars. Never happens in V6s or inline 6 engines.

    CAI noise

I have AEM CAI in my 03 corolla, i turned my car on yesterday morning to find that the noise that the CAI was very loud and i could hear it with my music loud and i can hear it making a sucking noise very loud, my car was at idle too.
Any idea why it did that?
I slightly did the same thing this morning when i went to school too, i checked the engine too nothin seemed to be loose.
but again Any idea why it made that very loud sucking or hissing noise?

That loud noise is a good thing :) Odd that you wouldn't hear it right after the install.

it could also be a bad thing if: once your engine is warmed up and idling- it shouldnt really make that much of a sound..however- when the gas is applied- its normal... but if its doing it all the time- something maybe be triggering higher idling where your car needs to suck in more air to keep up with the fuel..are you losing gas quicker than normal?

if you're talking about the ticking noise, it's normal. The ticking sound comes from your VSV (vaccum switching valve). Your CAI makes it louder.

well when it was making the noise it was 70 cooler then the normal temp which is at 90. I took it to the place i ordered it from they checked my engine for free and they said nothin seemed to be wrong with the engine or the intake, but one of the guys said the filter was dirty but didnt seem it was dirty enough to cause problems, so i cleaned it when i got home. I normally hear the hissing noise now but its not as loud as that day. i tighted everything up on it to make sure nothing was loose. but if its normal for cold temps then it should be fine i guess.
its been cool where im at and i know that it makes a slightly louder noise when warming up and then when it idles down i wont hear it as much until i give it gas.
Oh and no i dont think its eating gas, cause my mileage is been the same, since i drive very closely to the same amount of miles each week.

Thanks for the info on it

slvrrolla, dont worry, the louder the hissing, the more air you're sucking in, if people ask you what that noise is, just tell em it's your turbo spooling up =P
