Yes this is news. . . sad news. . . I e-mailed E.L. Prototypes about a 98-02 corolla header and this is their reply. . .

oh well. . . I guess Nobody wants to develop a header for a corolla. . . Just leaves alphawerks. . . let's see what they say. . .

I think ELP has kinda had a love-hate relationship with us Corolla owners. I don't really expect much more from them.

didn't el make a bunch of headers for the 03+ and no one bought them. i think that left a bad taste in their mouth.

well, now they have 03 headers all over the ebay... its just the 02's and lower that are the rarity... if you ask me- it looks like installation is a pain in the butt on the 98-02 b/c of its position near the firewall...plenty of muffler shops wont even touch cars with that design..

I bought a +03 header, chopped the tubes off about 1/2" from flange, and am in the process of getting an extra stock header to use as a template. The bends are in already, I just have to rotate them, and put the 4-1 collector back on. Nice to have access to a couple of metal shops.

you hit the nail on the head. kids around here whine about the aftermarket sucking...but when stuff comes out, they whine about the price.

Thats why DIY is the way to go, and when we all graduate to faster cars *one day* we will know exactly WTF were doing to the car. Itd be alot easier to mod when everybody makes shit. But way more fun and informative if you do the work yourself. Then you can take cars people havent done and mod em.

Having after maket support would make the corolla a easier car to mod. Not everone wants to buy a car just to spend alot on custom stuff and they may not have the experience to do all of that

ELPrototypes will not make anything for the Corolla because it will sit in their shop collecting dust just like every other corolla product they've produced.

sad part is can you blame them...

for example:

even though you see alot of honda out that are the defention of rice. those along with other owners who know how their are modding their car is supporting their market. someone may go out and buy a turbo and have not ideal what their doing. but even with that, its helping the industy grow.

I'm confident though, that someday I can look in a superstreet mag and see a CAI for a 98 corolla or a varaity of body kits and other things that would support toyota corolla ethustists

Sad enough it is true that we are outnumbered by the Honda tuners. More demand is a given. On that note I have to agree that DIY is the way to go and the way to learn modding first hand. It is not that we do not have the resources to call upon, hence this site and many others. I know several that have taken the impossible and proved it is possible.

Although, we do have one aftermarket site that is fighting for our cause and we should applaud them for their efforts. RacingSolution.com I have noticed that Brian w/RacingSolution is constantly trying to offer the Rolla Tuners more aftermarket parts.

Headers are over-rated. Even properly headers that are pulse tuned to get maximum scavenging effects give you like 2hp on a high hp honda engine (we're talking about 170hp here not 130hp). Ok so take 2hp - best case scenario, take into account that corolla 1.8L engines only make around 130hp, the fact that the flipped engine makes headers really short (making pulse tuning a joke), and the effort it takes to even fabricate an equal length header with proper merge collectors...i think money can be better spend on buying a tornado and sticking that in the intake. In other words, waste of money. Pantaloon - not dissing you, anything diy is cool.

If you want to think about it more, changing the headers does nothing but try to reduce pumping losses on the exhaust strokes of the cylinders. How much hp do you think is used up pushing the exhaust gas out the headers? I don't think it's a lot.

Pantaloon, if you're going to make your own header, why not make your own turbo manifold? =)

I disagree... Our header will have a dyno chart to show the gains will far surpass 2 hp

then it should be at least 3 sets of runs. 2 stock, 2 with just the headers, and 2 with various other aftermarket parts. That would show the best gains and consistancy

i felt a boost at high rpms when i did mine, but that was with stock exhaust, so it helps- and at times it can be extremely noticeable, but i was kinda "disappointed" in the end...not as i hoped

ya plus upgraded headers the bigger the opening more exhaust will flow through meaning your engine will breathe better which means more power and lil more fuel economy. But you would want to have a intake upgrade and exhaust upgrade if you do then you can maybe gain 10+ hp form a header upgrade. Plus doesnt JP Performance make a header for your model car? if not try Racer Design. but when i went to the shop to ask about the header the guy that i know said if you have a exhaust and intake upgrade you should gain a good amount of hp out of a header upgrade. But i guess i wont know until i go get a dyno test result. Plus with those mods a SC would create a good amount. I have a 03 corolla and idk if the header is different from a 98-02.

Just wanted to jump in here. First off, the guy that used to answer the emails for us misunderstood what I said and replied wrong. Its not that we wont make them, its the fact that a bolt in one make NO HP or TQ. We tested it already this summer.The head pipe and the flange screws up the effort. So bolt on is not worth the time or effort to make. The one we are working on requires welding. It will be in two peices and you must cut off the stock head pipe at the cat, swedge it open a bit and then weld on the new headpipe that come with the header.
