Greatest Sports Car of All Times

Once in a while some company outdoes itself by making a car that is actually bigger than the company itself. It happens in music all the time such as, Dark side of the moon by Pink Floyd, Achtung Baby and The Joshua Tree by U2 and Sargeant pepper's lonely heart club by the beatles etc. If there is a company that outdid itself by making a sports car larger than itself

Which one??? ( If it is none of these then please state)

    Ferrari Enzo
    Mercedes Maclaren
    Lamborghini Countach
    Nissan 280/300 ZX fairlady, 350Z
    Mitsubishi 3000GT
Mark 4 Toyota Supra Twin Turbo/Lexus SC300 Twin Turbo
    Mazda RX7 turbo/RX 8 (Rotary power baby!)
    BMW M3
    Dodge Viper Black Venom
    Honda Integra/Civic Type R
    Pontiac Firebird/Camaro SS
    Ford Mustang Cobra

First, you have to say only 'one' car since it is the greatest. As for Civic/Integra Type R, I know it sounds laughable, but the kind of loyal following this car commands and how the tuner community have made this car able to compete with the best of the best, In terms of influence in the sport compact community, I think it deserves to be in there.

My own opinion, Toyota Supra Twin Turbo all the way. Toyota outdid themself.

Viper SRT-10 ate the F-15 and a 9 Sec Supra can eat the Viper SRT-10 for lunch. I guess, Darwin's theory at work here ;-)

Chevrolet Corvette or Dodge Viper...tough choice, but I'll go with Vette because it is just so stupefying to me. The rumble of the LS6, the chrome wheels. Oh, so nice. Even though they are relatively common when one pulls up it's just gorgeous.

The 911 GT2/turbo is up there as well, but as it is a Porsche it is "expected" from them, plus I don't think it has enough flair for a 130K car.

It absolutely has to be the corvette. For the following reasons:

1.) 50 years in production, the Godfather of sports cars
2.) Only American production vehicle to kill Ferrari (Le Mans, 2/3 years)
    3.) Affordability/Value

Going back to the question, even after listening to all the votes for the heavy and big V8 Corvettes and Shelbys, I still think none of these can even compare the ingenuity that was put into the Toyota Supra MK4. After 50 years of building these cars, they never could ever come out with a car that weighed 3600 lbs and just with a few tweaks, turning a few wrenches and around $2000 worth of equipment could easily deliver 900 HP while remaining very agile and athletic. So Toyota Supra Twin Turbo MK4 was 10 years ahead of it''s time. To this day, no other automotive company could top this.

corvette. You go anywhere in the world, and talk to someone who knows little about cars, and tehy'd still recognize a corvette. There are very few other cars taht you can do that with.

prepare to never be impressed then. cuz you're living in a dream world if you think that's even possible.

As far as "out-doing themselves" i gotta say the dodge viper wins it - because it is so far beyond anything else they have ever produced... that no one would have ever expected it - nor would they expect that it just keeps getting better.

well it's true, the GNX is an amazing car, and definitely better than anything Buick in particular has ever put out, at the time, or since.

Why do people consider a pushrod turbo'd v8 to be a great thing? the viper is nothing spectacular.

I would definantly choose the m3, ferrari modena, lambo gallardo, audi rs6, mclaren f1 LM, Merc CLK Gtr, Porsche GTR, Celica GTC, etc....

The greatest sports car of all time was the Shelby Cobra 427----0-100mph and back to 0 in 10 seconds. This small British sports car with the Ford engine soundly whipped all the Corvettes and Ferraris of the day at a fraction of the price.
