ok, i'm assuming the amp is for bass right? like hooked up to a sub?
simply put. i always put the gain as high as i can put it without the amp starting to make wierd noises on it own. i never had a problem like that with my corolla because i had a cd player with rca preouts, with my tC i stuck with the stock unit, so i had to use a hi level line out convertor, so i picked up some major interference if the gain was all the way up.
if it's for a sub, i would put it on lpf. thats the low pass filter, usually it's adjustable for the range of your low pass, on my planet audio amp, it ranges from 200 hz to 30 hz. the lower the hz, the more you will feel the boom. the knob is for setting a how and low mark for your low pass filter. you don't have an adjuster for the filter, so lets move on to the bass boost.
now, from working with amps for a while, the majority will boost at 45 hz, anywhere from 0-15 decibels. thats what all of mine have pretty much done. it gives you a nice little punch on the bottom end. turn that knob till you like how it's sounding.

so, it's pretty much up to your ears. if you like the really boomy bass, turn up the gain and the boost, if you tighter sounding bass, lower the boost. and you can go anywhere in between. just be sure to listen to it with all the different styles of music that you listen to. it took me a while to get mine right, but thats because i listen to alot of different stuff, anywhere from techno bass to hard deathmetal double bass pedals (hardest to tune, need high and lower bass, but not too low), plus i have an active crossover that has more filter settings.
let me know how it goes

Also factor in what type of subs or speakers you have and the box type (ported, sealed, bandpass, combination). xnevergiveinx has a really good description on how what each item does - best way is to turn them up a little at a time until you get the sound you like.
