    Blu-Ray vs HD DVD

Just read an article about how the two technologies are going to be split, so the consumers will have to buy TWO different DVD players if they want to be able to watch all Hi Def Dvds....Sony, Disney, Columbia TriStar, and MGM will be on Blu Ray DVDs, and Warner, HBO, NewLine, Universal, and Paramount will be on HD DVD. It says FOX hasnt decided yet.

DVD players will start off running over $1000 each.

I dont see how the picture can be any better than running a current HDMI DVD player that upconverts the picture onto a Hi Def TV.

The two formats are incompatible with each other, so it's certain that a similar solution to that adopted in the case of DVDs is not feasible, since a device able to operate both technologies would require separate reading lasers and mechanisms, and would be, in the end, too expensive and bulky for the average user. The battle is hazardous and, if the industry won't settle soon for a direction or the other, the adopting of a format will be delayed and all the experts analyzing the phenomenon cite the end of another battle, the '80s confrontation between VHS and Betamax, which only brought disadvantages to all those involved. (From Cnet)

Blu-ray will NOT be compatible on players that are designed for HD-DVDs

Any player thats compatible with both would start out at about 3000 bucks.

Yeah, and it would have to be a company that doesnt have any stakes in any other company that is taking sides.

It wont be sony...since sony has committed to blu ray technology.

yeah, i hope it doesn't come out anytime soon, reason being - i copy almost all my dvds now...i doubt there will be any readily available copy method for a long time on the new format. i'd buy my dvds, but i'd be broke!
