Engine question for people with high CR

On my stock 00 Corolla in the warm weather I MUST run 91 or higher to keep the engine from spiking under load. CW

I'm running on 89 cause my car oppps I mean my bitch of a car does not want to run right on 87 and nothing the I have done to see about fixing the prob is working.

curious, how do you tell if your car doesnt "enjoy" 87 or the "regular"

I just use 87 octane (using FTC (MON+RON)/2 method), which is what my manual specifies. (It also states that for locales that do not use the FTC method of octane calculation, it must be 91 RON.)

In high altitudes, I use 85 FTC octane fuel. Higher octane than that and the car has very little power and I have to creep up the hills along with the semis while the people that got the right gas zip on by....

Also, be sure that your compression ratio is the same as your coochie rating...

im more curious about the question than the octane rating - unless you have a corolla XRS, or have swapped engines or pistons - then we all have the same CR - 10:1 on the 1zz-fe and im not sure about the pre-98s but im sure they're similar

thespud: CR is short for compression ratio

w1ngzer0: Have you changed pistons or other internals? If you have, I would just experiement to see what's best for your particular car. If you only have bolt-on mods, like I/H/E, then changing to a higher octane fuel probably will hurt performance instead of improving it.

Meanwhile, im just confused... in Oz i dont think i have ever heard of CR.. but in responce to the question.. i use 98RON, which is as high as we get in Australia unless we can get AvGas which is 100RON.

I only use 98 coz the 20v demands 100RON.. but the 16v (4A-FE) only needed 92RON

i use 87, it runs fine with my timing and current CR all the way to 7800 with no missing

fair enough... u had me all confused for a minute there...

it really depends. if i am running errands for the family and they let me fill up i get 93 ir i am paying for it i get 87. the may be a slight difference but it isn't that noticible.

I see a definite drop in MPG, but I guess not as much with performance. I usually get about 260 miles or so out of a tank before the light comes on and the one time I filled up with 93, I swear it seemed like I barely got 200 miles out of a tank. It was a dramatic difference.

the mr2 gets 87 octane.... (bigport 5 rib low comp block).... the ae92 gets 91 octane (smallport 7 rib high comp block)
