Weird Fuel Economy on my car....

I'm getting ~230 miles on my tank right now with very easy driving. Its all city driving. I live in the suburbs so no highway running for me. I run it to just before the light turns on so i'm guessing its 11 gallons since 13 gallons is the full tank.

I get 20.9mpg. Thats way below average. I have a 2000 automatic corolla with a ram air intake and a trd muffler. I stopped warming up my engine. I'm running 89 gas right now. I stopped using 93 cause it gave the same or worse fuel economy.

Any suggestions?
I replaced the spark plugs about 5000 miles ago. I have 45k on my car. I think its either my MAF sensor on my intake or my spark plugs are bad or something. I can't check cause its insanely cold here in philly so i gotta wait.

Another thing is when i turn on the car in the morning and pull out a minute later and i stop. The car feels like its about to shut off. But i waited and waited and it doesnt' stall but the rpm just drops extremely low i can hear it. But as soon as it warms up just a minute of driving later it doesn't do it anymore.

Maybe something is wrong with my pistons or something. I should be getting near 300 on my tank.

It's all the stop and go city driving that kills your milage. If you drove on the highway, you would have better gas milage.

yeah but 20 mpgs thats a little insaine. I drive all city an get 35.

35!!!??? that is almost impossible man, the dealer and toyota say that on the tags on the new vehicles but there isnt really anyway to hit that much unless u go a constant 50mph until your tank goes dry.

This sucks there has to be something wrong wit my car. With hard driving i get around 200 miles per tank. There has to be something wrong with my car

Stop and go and driving in the upper RPM range a lot will kill your milage fast. I have a 4 speed auto, so when I highway drive, I'm in the overdrive gear sitting around 2K.

I don't do highways. I drive in all milage range. Most i hit here is 55 for about 3 minutes on this one road. Then the rest is around 40-45mph. Speed limit around here is 35 and 45. So where it says 35 i go 45, Where it says 45 i go 55 usually

thats what I calculated it at about 3 months ago. it was probly just a fluke but thats what the calc said

What does running to lean mean? It gets too much gas in the engine and doens't use it all? And that fouls out spark plugs?

I don't know whats wrong either cause I have the same problem. I only get around 230 driving around the city and sometimes highway. Not only is my stupid engine eating gas like crazy, but also oil. I was like over a quart less when I changed it and the freaking oil light came on. Time for a swap.

I dk what I get but it's extremely low... only in 1 week on the Corolla I put almost 80 bucks on gas.... man I dk what's going on but the car is killing me.. even my Talon puts out better gas mileage and it's turbo'd wtf??? any suggestion on that one?

lemme know what you find out, i have the same car, 2000 Auto 4 Spd and i noticed that lately my car's been getting REALLY crap ass gas mileage (22 mpg) and I changed my plugs/pcv valve about 3000 miles ago, stock airbox w/k&n, and trd muffler.

76k on my odo though.

As soon as it gets warm i'm checking my spark plugs. 40's outside right now is kinda low. My hands go knumb

Anyone from 2k3corolla.org will remember me. I got 17-19 mpg on 87 with my 2003 corolla. So dont complain. I definitly had it worse. BTW thats stock.

I think its more of a concern than a complaint. At least mine is, 20-22 mpg is like 70% of the fuel efficiency that the vehicle should have, which would indicate a problem somewhere, that will probably compound with time as most car problems do.

Maybe automatics just suck as they age. Cause my friends nieghbor just got a 87 honda accord coupe 5 speed. He gets ~300 miles with some what hard driving. Manuals kick ass but they are annoying i think. But i'd take a manual if i had a chance.

I get ~32mpg mixed city/highway. New PCV valve..old air filter (K&N in need of cleaning)..I have over 160k on the car at the moment..

does ne1's fuel gauge needle jump, i dont mean centimeters either, i mean wehn i stop i can actually see the needle come up as if i was re-filling the car and when i go i can see the needle go down, sometimes it goes down as much as half o one of the "bars"

I guess i'm pretty stupid or stupid but wat is the PCV valve? How does it look like? What does it do? Is it easy to replace?

damn man, i only get like 250 for my entire tank, i do both highway and stopngo driving.

Check your oil and plugs. Those are both common reasons for low gas mileage, or kilometerage if you're a crazy canuck

I'm getting about 26mpg but my oil pan was leaking so the level was low and I've got my snowboard rack on so...

I just did an oil chance. So i should be getting good mileage. This sucks!

can anyone tell me about PCV Valve from by previous post?

shit I changed my oil and plugs about like 2 weeks ago man I dk what the problem should be though but my rolla is just breathin gas in and out man I drive to work which is like less than 3 miles and it marks empty so I dk wth is goin on with that car lol...... *sigh* damn.... I guess I'll check into the whole PVC valve too...

my friend use to have a 94 corolla 1.6L with 190,000 on the odo and he got about 30mpg, i have a 95 corolla 1.8L with 130,000 and i get like 27-28, wtf is with that shit, lol...i only have .2liters more, lol and less milege

Yeah, check the PCV valve, it should be clean and free moving inside. Make sure the filter on your air intake is clean, not too oily.
When's the last time you've cleaned your fuel injectors or checked your fuel injection system? Could be dirty injectors or fuel rail. Could also be something going on with your emissions control system.

You should just get it scanned. It may be the quickest way to find out exactly what the problem is.

well if something was to be wrong with my emissions they would've told me at the emissions test place since I had mine done not less than a month ago too.... I'll probably add one of those fuel cleaning additives to see how that works and check the PVC valve which I've never worked with so I have no idea where it sits or what it looks like so I dk lol and we as for the air filter is brand new too, spark plugs are new too, and fresh oil and tranny fluid (if that affects which I don't think it does) but well pretty much the car is up and running good but maybe is the fuel system or the PVC.... I hope
