I have a 98 corolla with approx 114,000 miles. When I am going uphill I am revving in around the 3000 rpm range. I get this rotten egg smell. Does this mean I might need a need a new O2 sensor or a new catalytic converter? I also recently put some fuel injector cleaner in when I got my last gas fill up? Could this be what is causing the smell? Just curious.

i just asked some honda techs and they said it could be a couple of things but it is prob a catalytic converter

The reduction section in your catalytic converter, the part that changes NOx and some CO (carbon monoxide) back to N2 and CO2, also has the tendency to start absorbing SOx, or oxides of sulfur when its internal temperature drops below about 500°C. As Pat stated, sulfur is a natural contaminate in most fuels which, when burned, are emitted as oxides of sulphur.

When the engine is required to put out more power and the catalytic converter heats up over 600°C, the catalytic converter starts releasing the SOx as H2S and SO3. The SO3 has no odor but the H2S (Hydrogen Sulfide) gas does, which is what you smell. That usually means the reduction section of your converter IS working, regenerating itself, and purging the accumulated sulphur. The older your O2 sensor and catalytic converter is and the slower they react, the more H2S you'll tend to get.

Because sulfur reduces the catalytic converters efficiency in converting NOx, it's conentration in gasoline and motor oil is being reduced in the U.S. (eventually close to zero) by EPA and CARB pressures. Most standard U.S. emissions tests check for NOx emissions but don't (yet) check for SOx or H2S emissions.

Sulphur can be a normal impurity in the fuel.

I think it's the catalytic converter and it can't be the fuel injector cleaner that u just put in.....they are made it clean your fuel injector and they don't smell like rotten egg...

i had that smell when my clutch was going bad but listen to the experts lol

well when the clutch went on my dads truck it was mostly a burning rubber smell. not really a rotten egg smell to me.

I usually get that smell after I eat Taco Bell.....

its funny though that its only when I go uphill.... and it also only started since last week. The reason why I was thinking that it was from the fuel injector cleaner was because it only started last week when I used the fuel injector cleaner. I was thinking it was from the loose carbon deposits. I sure as hell hope its not the cat b/c those things are expensive as hell.

well, its called toyota using cheap cats. Most of the 03 owners complained about it. One guy got it replaced and wala no more smell

well for the 2000 up vehicles its on as a glitch or whatever and you could take it in to the dealer to get fixed for free (but thats the vvti engine)

I also noticed that Im getting low highway mileage.... 29-30mpg.... I wonder if this could be the result of a bad cat also.

so Im not exactly sure if I do need to get my cat replaced or not.... im not getting the cans on the road sound yet.

Just to let you know cats can go whenever. I had a 2001 Rav4 and the cat went at 35,000km. It happens and I hate that smell that comes from it!

one the 03 owners replaced his cat and no more smell. Its just like nissan with the feathering problem they don't want to deal with it.
