this is what i do when i get one small thing of spyware. the instant i find it, i roll back my windows xp to the day before because i usually find out the instant it happens. if i dont know when it seems that i got it, i got an assortment of programs that will help me get rid of it: pestpatrol, adaware, and spybot.

For most things, Ad-Aware, Spybot, and even Microsoft's Antispyware programs are sufficient. If you know what you're doing, use Sysinternals tools (www.sysinternals.com) like process explorer to kill all the suspicious processes, autoruns to remove them from startup, and hijack this to get rid of any BHO's (browser hijacks), then run ad-aware to clean up the files.

If you're infected w/elitebar, (there's a new variant that's using rootkit technology to hide itself from the Windows API, aka there is no Windows scanning tool that will find and remove it for you), then you're definately SOL, unless you've got yourself a copy of BartPE, or ERD Commander laying around, and you know which files to delete.

use the new microsoft anti spyware software thinggy its free and seems to find more than the other two big ones (spybot and ad-aware). or just switch to linux and you wont get any spyware at all.

ad-aware's gone to hell lately, since they've fired their cheif researcher cuz he was a college student. they only update like twice a month now, as opposed to the 3 times a week they used to update their definitions.

gentoo linux (stage 1 of course) all the way :D
